Marschall Saber was a freelance assassin employed by a gangster named Liebowitz to assassinate a rival gangster named Rinaldi. Rinaldi meanwhile, had hired his own assassin Cannon to take out Liebowitz. With the cooperation of District Attorney Marcia King, the pair set out to kill each other's bosses, knowing full well that King would intervene on their behalf.

When Vigilante Adrian Chase learned that the pair had been set free and recommended for the Witness Protection Program, he followed them to their apartment and confronted them. After a brief fight, Saber and Cannon managed to bring Vigilante down. Before they had a chance to kill him, they were nearly killed themselves by the Electrocutioner. They were rushed to the hospital, but escaped shortly after they recovered.

Some time later, Cannon and Saber were hired to kill Vigilante, an assignment they happily accepted. They pair ambushed Vigilante, but during the course of the battle, Saber was injured. Rather than risk Saber's health, Cannon chose to depart the scene with a wounded Saber in tow.

After Saber's recovery, the pair confronted Dave Winston, a man who had also assumed the guise of the Vigilante. The battle came to an end when Vigilante managed to manipulate Cannon and Saber into wounding each other. Though it was believed that Saber was killed during this incident, he did in fact survive, and continued working on assignments with his partner Cannon.

Abilities

Strength level

Saber possessed the strength level of a man his age, size and weight who engaged in intensive regular exercise.

  • Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985-86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.
  • Cannon and Saber were not only partners, but also lovers.
