History
Surviving Martians, forced to flee their doomed home world, immigrated to a planet in the Cygnus system known as Mars II. There they established a democratic government, with the Martian Manhunter acting as one of their administrative leaders. The military commander known only as the Marshal came to learn that an Earth vessel called the Viking II had landed on Mars in the 1970s. He believed that this craft was a robotic slave sent to pillage Martian resources and declared the Earth mission as an unforgivable act of war. The Marshal proved charismatic enough that many other Martians believed in his words, and formed a coalition known as the Red Brotherhood.
Several years ago, the Marshal and his Red Brotherhood staged a coup against the Mars II elders, many of whom were forced into exile. J'onn J'onzz, learned that the Marshal had intended on invading the planet Earth, and fled Mars II with plans of giving the people of Earth an advanced warning.
The Marshal, as well as J'onn's former lover, J'en, learned of the Manhunter's treachery and sent a squad of warships after him. They followed him back to Earth, but it was actually the U.S. Air Force that ultimately brought J'onn's craft out of the sky. The Martian Manhunter alerted his old colleagues in the Justice League of America, who in turn, warned the United Nations and the President.
The Marshal meanwhile, sent his robotic valet, the Challenger, to the U.N. to address terms of surrender. He declared that in exchange for complete control of the planet, Earth's human population would be allowed to live, albeit in supervised concentration camps. Refusal to submit to Martian rule would result in annihilation of the Terran species.
The world leaders stood in agreement, and refused to submit to the Martian invaders. The Marshal sent a fleet of ships to maintain a steady orbit around the Earth, destroying all of the planet's communication satellites. They even succeeded in destroying the satellite headquarters of the Justice League of America. The Justice League fought back, but were only able to disable the Challenger robot and a handful of fighter craft.
It was the Martian Manhunter who ultimately brought the war to a close. Borrowing a Justice League shuttlecraft, he flew to the fleet's mother ship and challenged the Marshal to trial by combat. Their fight was broadcast across the entire Martian fleet. During the fight, the Marshal used his powers of invisibility to gain an advantage – a practice frowned upon during trials of honor. His tactics proved fruitless however, and the Martian Manhunter was able to successfully defeat him.
The failure of the Marshal to win the combat represented a tremendous loss of face for the remainder of the fleet. The Martian Manhunter convinced them to abandon their quest to conquer the Earth, and return to Mars II. The Marshal remained in their company.
What became of the Marhal upon returning to Mars II remains unknown.

Powers
Known Powers:
Many, if not all of the Marshal (Earth-One)'s powers and abilities are common to members of his race, even if demonstration of such abilities has not been explicitly shown in a canonical resource.
- Malleable Form: The Marshal (Earth-One) possessed psionic control over his physical form, even down to the molecular level. As a form of shape-shifting, this power enabled him to contort his physical structure allowing him to adopt human form, elongate his limbs, grow to immense size, and so on. The Marshal (Earth-One) could maintain his selected form for an indeterminate amount of time without undue risk or strain.
- Invisibility The Marshal (Earth-One) possessed the ability to bend waves of light around him, rendering him invisible to most forms of human detection. Through shape-shifting, he could also alter his body's temperature, which allowed him to be invisible to most forms of scanning technology.
- Size Increase: The Marshal (Earth-One) could increase in size by absorbing external material.
- Alter Density: The Marshal (Earth-One) could increase his molecular density to become tougher and stronger, as well as decrease it to become incorporeal and thus able to pass through solid objects.
- Flight: The Marshal (Earth-One) could defy gravity and fly through sheer force of will. This abiity is psionic in nature, and functions similarly to tactile telekinesis.
- Superhuman Strength While the exact magnitude of Marshal (Earth-One)'s strength is unknown, it is generally accepted that his strength levels easily surpass the capacity to lift 100 tons. This ranks him in the same strength level as a Kryptonian under a yellow sun.
- Superhuman Speed Either through flight or natural movement, Marshal (Earth-One) could maintain speed and reflexes far in excess to that of a standard Earth human.
- Superhuman Endurance The Marshal (Earth-One)'s endurance was just as formidable as his strength or invulnerability. When not in the presence of fire, he could operate under extreme conditions for an indeterminate period of time without showing signs of fatigue. The exact range of this power is unknown. When in the presence of fire, Marshal (Earth-One)'s endurance diminished greatly.
- Martian Vision: Marshal (Earth-One) possessed super-powered eyesight, commonly referred to as "Martian Vision". Martian Vision is similar to Kryptonian heat vision in that it can cause combustible objects to explode. He could also see into the infrared spectrum as well as see items that are invisible to non-Martian eyes.
- Self-Sustenance: Martian physiology is self-sufficient negating the need for food or drink. As such, the Marshal (Earth-One) also did not produce waste.
- Telepathy: The Marshal (Earth-One) possessed the ability to read the minds of others and project his thoughts to varying degrees. Marshal (Earth-One) could also project his mental essences into a gestalt community known as the "Great Mind". Through this, he could use his telepathy to enhance the telepathic strength of other Martians. A Martian's expertise with telepathy varies from Martian to Martian. Some Martians, such as J'onn J'onnz, can use this ability with such precision that they can extract repressed memories from a subject regardless of how dormant the memory may lie. This power can also enable a Martian to reverse the effects of amnesia or psychological brainwashing. Martians can also use their telepathy to alter a subject's psychological profile, enabling them to manipulate, and in some cases, outright control their chosen target. This practice is greatly discouraged however, and only rarely used.
- Extrasensory Input: The Marshal (Earth-One) possessed nine different senses.
Weakness: All Martians have a genetic weakness against fire. The only thing that can harm a Martian is intense exposure to super-heated plasma.
Known Abilities: No known abilities.
Strength Level: Superhuman by Earth standards; normal by Martian standards.
Miscellaneous
Equipment: Protective battle armor
Transportation: Martian warship
Weapons: Various handheld laser weapons
