Melba Li is an agent of the IMP division, a secret task of government agents that track and hunt mind-arasites from another dimension that usually appear to people as imaginary friends.

When Melba was a kid in Cannon City, Minnesota, she was infected by a mind-parasite named Polly Peachpit who demanded her attention and her fear. Melba convinced her friend Brinke Calle of Polly's existence, and the two remained in fear, despite Brinke not having the ability to actually see Polly herself. One night in the woods, while the two girls confessed their sins, Polly convinced Melba that, in order to save herself, she had to kill Brinke, forcing Melba to stab her friend with a knife seventeen times.

Soon after, Melba was tried and sentenced for her crime, no one believing her that Polly Peachpit was real. For years she lived in a juvenile detention center, demonstrating anti-social behavior to keep people away from her and to keep Polly from returning. On her 18th birthday, as she was prepared to move to an adult penitentiary, Melba was contacted by Special Agent Virgil Crockett, who knew she had been able to and could still see the mental-parasites that his team - the IMP division - dedicated their lives to hunting. Convinced by Crockett to secretly work as his partner in exchange for freedom, Melba was forced to contact Polly once again and manipulate the monster to work alongside them and fight the monsters they couldn't hurt. Wanting only to feed on Li's admiration and fear like she had when Li was a girl, Polly accepted.[1]

Powers

  • Enhanced Vision: Li is what the IMP division calls an "Advanced Host"; due to her infection from Polly Peachpit at a young age, her infection spread to the point of being able to see other imaginary fiends as well.
