Melisande al Ghul was the wife of Ra's al Ghul around the end of World War II.

With her husband, Melisande fostered Ra's godson Quinlan, who had been orphaned when his parents were on a mission in Nagasaki when the bomb was dropped. As Quinlan grew gloomier, demanding to be called Qayin (a variation on the name of the first murderer), Melisande — who was at the time pregnant with Talia — pleaded with Ra's to send him away, but her husband would not have it.

One night, Melisande found Quinlan snooping around a room containing a prototype Lazarus Pit — a room forbidden to all in the household except Ra's. Startled, the boy ran away but, in doing so, pushed Melisande in the pit. She died instantly, and Talia, then a little girl, witnessed her mother's death.
