Milestone Media is a comic book company which publishes their content through DC Comics, originally through the Milestone imprint.

History

Publication History

Milestone Media was founded in 1993 by a coalition of African-American artists and writers (namely Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis and Derek T. Dingle) who believed that minorities were severely underrepresented in American comics. Milestone Media was their attempt to correct this imbalance.

Milestone Media struck a deal with DC Comics, under which DC would publish Milestone's comics, but Milestone would retain all legal and creative control, including copyright. The comics were published under the Milestone imprint.

All of the Milestone titles took place in the same universe, separate from the main DC Universe. Most were set in the fictional Midwestern city of Dakota; the Milestone universe is commonly referred to as the Dakotaverse. Characters from mainstream DC Comics existed only as comic book characters in the Dakota Universe, which caused confusion when the two briefly intertwined during the events of Worlds Collide in 1994. Although Worlds Collide would be remembered by all of the Milestone characters who took part in it, it was erased out of mainstream DC continuity by Zero Hour, which took place immediately afterward.

The Milestone imprint lasted for four years. It went into decline through 1995 and 1996, marked by falling sales and a number of canceled titles. The last three ongoing Milestone titles—Static (Volume 1), Icon (Volume 1), and Hardware (Volume 1)—were cancelled mid-story in 1997.

In 2000, Milestone Media launched the Static Shock animated series on Kid's WB. It ran for four seasons, totaling 52 episodes, from 2000 to 2004.

McDuffie's mini-series Static Shock: Rebirth of the Cool (Volume 1) was published in 2001, but sales were not sufficient to justify an ongoing.

Merge with DC

In July 2008, at the San Diego Comic Con, DC Comics executive editor Dan DiDio announced that the Milestone characters, along with Dakota City, would be incorporated into New Earth under Dwayne McDuffie's aegis. Worlds Collide would not be addressed; as far as all characters involved were concerned, Dakota City had always been a part of New Earth, and this was the first time the characters had met. The original Milestone runs would be collected in trade paperbacks, and McDuffie would be working on a concluding story for the Milestone universe, bringing it to a final close.[1]

McDuffie later expanded on this, saying all the original Milestone comics would be in continuity, but that a small number had been forgotten by the inhabitants of both universes, apart from one person, who was responsible for transplanting Dakota City into New Earth.

This never occurred but Static was a member of the Teen Titans for several issues toward the end of Teen Titans (Volume 3), teamed with Black Lightning in The Brave and the Bold (Volume 3) #24 and had a bit part in Brightest Day #23. In The New 52, Static Shock (Volume 1) was set in Prime Earth and Static again interacted with mainstream DCnU characters.
