Synopsis for Sandra of the Secret Service: "The Poison Gas Murders, Part 2"
Continued from Part 1.
Sandra and Chief Ames break into Mussdorf's laboratory, and find Mussdorf on the floor, dead from a bullet wound. Chief Ames has some questions for the hotel clerk who had earlier directed them to the lab. His story sounds fishy, but also unclear. The Chief says that he can't find a mark on the body and they'll have to examine the stomach contents to find out how he died.
Back at Secret Service headquarters, a medical examiner proves that Mussdorf died of the same poison gas as all the prior victims. They then receive a telephone tip from the hotel clerk, that Mussdorf's car is missing, and what license number to look for. The Secret Service passes this along to the NYPD, an APB goes out, and two patrol-car cops spot the dead man's car.
Cops arrest the driver and turn him over to Chief Ames, who questions him until he confesses. This guy, never named, had a complicated grudge with the late Mussdorf, and did indeed murder Mussdorf, but it really was Mussdorf who had done all the earlier poison gas murders, using a weapon that this guy now pulls out and shows to Chief Ames and Sandra. (He had it on him this whole time, apparently, while he was being arrested and interrogated, and now only pulls it out to illustrate a point. Nobody bats an eye when this happens, either.) The gun shoots a concentrated gas ray, which accounts for the condition of Mussdorf's body. The Chief ends up hoping that the courts will be lenient with this guy, because of what a despicable scoundrel the late Mussdorf had been.
