Quote1 I'm done taking any more day jobs. It's simply not necessary. Gotham needs my attention 24/7. I owe it to Bruce-- hell-- I owe it to Gotham. I grew up there, it's my hometown, it's in my bones. Quote2

Nightwing (Volume 2) #153 is an issue of the series Nightwing (Volume 2) with a cover date of April, 2009.

Synopsis for "Black Dawn"

At the Cloisters, the members of the JSA help Nightwing pack up the equipment from his headquarters and they empty the place in just a few minutes. Nightwing thanks them for their help before he is left alone with Flash. Nightwing tells him he is returning to Gotham and will focus entirely on the city.

Dick travels to Gotham by train. Alfred meets him at the station, and on their drive home, Dick notices that there's a broken lamp post on Park Row.

Alfred and Nightwing help Robin, descend to the Batcave's deepest areas, while they look for the missing Giant Penny. They pull it up and return it to its rightful place. The Penny was the last piece of the cave missing, and the Batcave is complete once more.

Tim leaves. Nightwing and Alfred discuss how hard the situation must be for Tim after losing almost every important person in his life. Nightwing thinks Tim might be hoping for Bruce to return because almost every other major superhero has returned from the dead, but when Alfred asks his honest opinion, Dick admits that he believes Bruce is gone for good. Alfred thinks the same, but despite their loss, he thinks that the best thing to do is carry on, for Bruce's memory. Tim is eavesdropping on their conversation, but by the time they leave the cave, he is gone.

In his old room Nightwing finds the candle that was used during his oath and decides to take it with him. On the anniversary of Thomas and Martha Wayne's murder, Nightwing goes to Park Row and replaces the broken light bulb, returning light to the neighborhood.

Nightwing places the candle on the ground and lights it as he recalls that this was where Bruce lost his parents and his destiny began, but his own future started here too with the kindness of a stranger. While Bruce had Leslie Thompkins to look after him in the aftermath of his parents' murders, Dick had Bruce. Nightwing silently thanks Bruce for the hope he brought to Gotham City.

Dick's surprise isn't ruined yet and he takes her inside a small plane and after reaching a some altitude, Dick makes Barbara wear a security harness and then he finally allows her to take off the blindfold. She is surprised by the fact that Dick wants her to jump off the plane and she refuses to do so. However, Dick tells her that she won't have to jump alone, he ties his body behind her and with his help, they both jump away and start diving across the sky. Notes

  • The first story is reprinted in the trade paperback Nightwing: The Great Leap.
  • The first story confirms to have happened after final crisis due to the mention of Barry Allen being "back", however it appears to happen before the legion of three worlds story due to Alfred and Grayson mentioning Connor and Bart having died being a source of grief for Tim Drake. (Further confirming that the continuity of final crisis and it's tie-ins are questionable to say the least.)
  • The first story is also dedicated to legendary Batman creators Dennis O'Neil, Dick Giordano and Julius Schwartz. In fact, the last page of the first story is a homage to the cover and first page of Detective Comics #457, created by them.
