History

Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom in the north-east of the island of Ireland. It was created in 1921, when Ireland was partitioned between Northern Ireland and the state of Ireland. In stark contrast to southern Ireland, Northern Ireland was made of unionists, who wanted to remain within the United Kingdom, and many were Protestant descendants of colonists from Britain.

Since its creation, Northern Ireland was marked by discrimination and hostility between Protestant unionists and Irish Catholic nationalists, which the latter strongly favor for a united Ireland. This lead into three decades of violence known as "The Troubles" beginning from 1968 to 1998. The conflict ended in the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, although sectarianism and religious segregation still remain major social problems, and sporadic violence has continued.
