History

The o'Dares have been law enforcement officers in Earth's Opal City since the the turn of the 20th century. When Sheriff Brian Savage, the western hero also known as Scalphunter, felt he was getting too old, he started evaluating his men for whom would take his star when he left his position. He ended up choosing his youngest deputy, Carny o'Dare. Carny died in an infamous shootout in Opal called "The Seige of Garlic Lane", but not before his title was changed from Sheriff to Chief-of-Police. The next major o'Dare known is Billy o'Dare, whom was saved by Ted Knight early in his career as Starman. He would be a long and consistent presence aiding the crime fighter his entire tenure in Opal.

Billy had 5 children, all Opal City police officers. The entire clan became great friends and allies of Jack Knight during his tenure as Starman.

Clarence o'Dare was the oldest and highest ranking. While the city was contained in Culp's shadow dome, he mobilized the remnants of Opal Police.
Next oldest was Matt, who was well known to be a crooked officer, who could be bribed and . He tried to make right on his sins with the help of The Shade after he came to realize he was the reincarnation of Brian Savage. After that he would slowly took on more of Savage's mannerisms.
Matt died after being shot by his brother Barry during the events surrounding Culp's shadow dome. Barry O'Dare was a detective whom sold his family legacy out, helping Culp as he controlled The Shade's body. He died attempting to kill his brother Clarence.
Mason O'Dare is the youngest of the O'Dare men currently serving. He, like his father Billy, is a beat cop at heart, and has been shown to be exceptionally brave in his actions. After the events of Grand Guginol, he and the psychic Charity agreed to be married. In the final issue of Starman vol 2 he was shot by the arrow of The Spider, but was saved by the lingering spirit of Zartara as a wedding present to his former lover.
Hope o'Dare, the youngest of the O'Dare children is in a constant struggle to prove herself to her brothers. She is the first one who Matt tells about his corrupt activities. She is also very suspicious of The Shade, not for his shadow powers but because he is English. She warms to him though as he helps Matt, even stating that she might like to go on a date with him.

Paraphernalia

Equipment: The o'Dares, as police officers, have the legal access to firearms and training of police officers. None have been shown to have meta capabilities, except for Matt, who was the reincarnation of Scalphunter, and near the end of his life could catch glimpses of his predecessor's life.
Transportation: No special means - each seem to have vehicles and access to police vehicles.
Weapons: Each of the O'Dare children had a weapon's preference. Matt O'Dare used two pistols; one his service semi-automatic and the other a revolver. Hope preferred a tactical shot gun. Mason and Clarence used single semi-automatic service pistols. It is unknown what weapons previous O'Dares preferred.
