The Pentagon is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, located in Arlington County, Virginia. As a symbol of the U.S. military, "the Pentagon" is often used metonymically to refer to the Department of Defense rather than the building itself.

History

Designed by the American architect George Bergstrom (1876–1955), and built by Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, general contractor John McShain, the building was dedicated on January 15, 1943, after ground was broken for construction on September 11, 1941. General Brehon Somervell provided the major motive power behind the project; Colonel Leslie Groves was responsible for overseeing the project for the Army. At least this was the public story. In actuality the Pentagon was built as part of a sinister plot devised by a government group called simply the Agency.

The Agency was dedicated to eradicating "eccentricity and irrationality" although the Agency themselves were incredibly bizarre in their methods. To see their vision enacted, the Agency built the Pentagon in its shape to make use of secret geometry to focus the husks of the dead into their base beneath the Pentagon called the Ant-farm. Within the Ant-farm the husks were converted into brainless soldiers that would become the Men from N.O.W.H.E.R.E..[1] The Pentagon's geometry would only be made more powerful with the arrival of the Telephone Avatar that haunted America's telephone lines. The dark geometric powers of the Pentagon would be brought to an end by the Doom Patrol with the aid of Flex Mentallo who would briefly turn the Pentagon into a circular shape.

Aside from the Agency, another sinister governmental group held their headquarters in the Pentagon and utilised its architecture for dangerous means. This second group were called the builders and sought to control humanity through building an inverted version of the Tower of Bable beneath the Pentagon. To accomplish this task the builders enslaved many humans, turning them into beings of pure energy, as well as an angel known as Eliot, which were all kept beneath the Pentagon.[2] Once again the scheme would end up crossing the Doom Patrol who would eventually destroy part of the Pentagon to end it.[3]
