Synopsis for the 1st Story
The Drummer sets a device on a table and tells Elijah Snow and Jakita Wagner that it is the communications device that was taken from John Stone. Snow tells him to turn the device on so he can speak to Randall Dowling. Drummer turns it on and Elijah contacts Dowling. Snow tells Dowling he wants to meet to call a truce. Snow offers the truce in return for Dowling providing Snow with all the information he has gathered over the years. They set the meet for noon the following day at the remote diner in the desert, where Jakita met Elijah and convinced him to join Planetary.
The following day, Dowling and Kim Süskind meet with Drummer and Snow. Dowling insists the Drummer step away and scans Elijah for devices, finds that he is clean, and then hands over his data storage device, that contains all data Dowling has amassed over the years, to Elijah. Snow in turns giving it to The Drummer as he walks away with it into the desert where he is quickly picked up by Jakita with her superspeed.
Dowling warns Elijah not to use his cold powers, as he can reach into his mind to block their use. Elijah reprimands Dowling for holding back critical data that could save many lives, and for selling out Earth to aliens from an alternate planet. Snow offers to team up with Dowling to save the world, but Dowling refuses. Elijah request Dowling to accept his proposals or die. Unconcern, Dowling boast that he can use his powers to stop Elijah from what he will do to threaten him and Süskind, and will also use his vessel to escape. However, Elijah state that there is nothing to support them and dares Dowling to contact his ship, and Süskind to use her goggles. Nothing works. Elijah then reveals that when he gave the data storage device to the Drummer, the Drummer slipped him a small device that creates a localized distortion of informational space, which has cut off Dowling and Süskind's ability to communicate with their electronics. Elijah summons a shiftship door and disappears through it, leaving Dowling and Süskind argue with one another. As the two argues the ground opens up around them, creating a large ravine and a large shiftship launches out of the ground. Dowling and Süskind drop miles to the surface below to their death.
On the shiftship are Elijah and Jim Wilder, who is captain of the vessel and steering it into the heavens, explaining that he recruited the descendants of the survivors of City Zero to fill out the ranks of the ship's required seven-man crew. The Planetary team is aboard and takes its first venture into space.
Wilder initiates a door onto the alternate Earth where the Four received their powers and made a pact with aliens to prepare Earth for hostile takeover. The bodies of Dowling and Süskind are dropped off, as well as a recording device. One of the aliens listens to it. In the recording Elijah tells the inhabitants that any incursion into his Earth will be met with similar results for the invaders. The alien crushes the device in its hands and throws it to the ground in disgust.
Aboard the shiftship, Jakita can't believe the adventure is over. Elijah laughs and states otherwise. He has one last loose thread to resolve from the 20th century, then he and the team will enjoy long lives in this strange world in which they live, doing their best to keep it that way.
