Power of the Atom #9 is an issue of the series Power of the Atom (Volume 1) with a cover date of February, 1989.

Synopsis for "Victory Day"

Martian Manhunter has asked The Atom to join the J.L.I.. Ray isn't sure how to say no until Guy Gardner leads a drunken conga-line through the Embassy. The Atom says that he isn't joining because there are too many jerks. As if to prove his point, the Green Lantern G'nort apported into the room and the Atom takes his leave.

In the streets of Manhattan, it is V.I. Day, and the celebration of victory over the Alien Alliance has gotten out of hand. The Atom apprehends a drunk driver, and goes to the scene of a riot. Borrowing a police bullhorn, Ray calms them down, and floors a drunken challenger; all of which wins the Atom the respect of the Batman. Ray says that Guy Gardner probably started the riot anyway.

In Dr Hyatt's office, the phone rings and the Atom travels out of it, into the middle of a surprise party organized by Enrichetta. Ray appears most surprised by the longing look that Jean Loring gives him. She is there with Paul Hoben, and Paul is drinking too much.

Author Norm is excited, since Warner Books wants to release an updated paperback edition of The Atom's Farewell. Ray continues to mingle, and soon has enough and tries to slip out, but runs into Jean. He tells her that his Princess is dead, and they have a sorrowful embrace in the kitchen. Enricha and Paul both look on jealously.
