The Preserver was a collector of creatures who were the last of their race, which made him pursue Superman.
History
The Preserver made it his life's mission to capture all endangered species in the universe and keep them in captivity to prevent their extinction. He hired the bounty hunter Lobo to capture Superman, the last Kryptonian. Once Lobo brought him Superman, he learned Lobo was also the last of his own kind, the last Czarnian (having killed all the others himself). He betrayed the bounty hunter and added him to the collection as well.
Working together, Superman and Lobo escaped the Preserver's collection and while the Preserver apparently perished in the battle, Superman took custody of all the species the Preserver had collected and housed them in the Fortress of Solitude.
