The Quakerer was an agent of a hostile reptilian race from the far-future.
History
According to a transmission from the underground human resistance of a 420th century future, the Quakerer was one of a race of reptilian creatures who evolved from simple chameleons. The humans and chameleons broke out into an all-out race war in their future-era, which the chameleons were in the process of winning. The Quakerer came to the 20th Century in order to conduct tests with a weapon that could induce seismic tremors, hence the alias that he was given by those who spotted him. Superman encountered the Quakerer after a fourth tremor triggered within the last 2 weeks and observed as the creature appeared to duck into his 344 Clinton Street apartment building. Superman later realized that the Quakerer was using his hyper-evolved chameleonic abilities to masquerade as a human tenant of the apartment building. Superman later witnessed the building's molecular structure shift to avoid collision with a plummeting helicopter and deduced that the Quakerer had the power to change the shape of other objects as well as his own. An X-ray scan of the building revealed four candidates for the Quakerer's alter ego: martial artist Jonathan Slaughter, industrial engineer Nathan Warbow, April Marigold's sister May, and retired business executive Martin Thorpe. Superman arranged for Slaughter, Warbow, Thorpe, and May to be transported into the Mesozoic Era along with himself in his civilian identity as Clark Kent, disguising a time-machine all five of them had boarded as a city bus.[1]
Once trapped in the past, Superman planned to pressure the Quakerer into revealing himself from among the members of the stranded group, only for the Quakerer to turn the tables by animating several vines into attacking the group. Clark was forced to give himself away as Superman to confront the menace head-on. Subsequently, Jonathan Slaughter appeared to transform into the Quakerer, engaging Superman's attentions for the precious moments needed for Thorpe -- the true Quakerer -- to commandeer the time-machine and take it past the time-barrier. Superman realized that the Quakerer had temporarily shifted Slaughter's appearance to resemble its own as a diversionary tactic and cornered Thorpe on the bus as it leaped into the Timestream. Superman fought and eventually overcame the Quakerer, who jumped from the bus in order to escape. As a result, the Quakerer was lost in the maelstrom of chronal energies. The Quakerer would rematerialize in an indeterminate period of Earth's past, ironically being destined to die in the past while having been born in the future. Afterwards, Superman erased the memories of the other tenants to protect his secret identity, having Batman temporarily impersonate Martin Thorpe in order so no one would suspect anything was amiss.[2]

- This version of Quakerer, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–86 Crisis on Infinite Earths event and later restored following the rebirth of the infinite Multiverse during the Dark Crisis of 2022-2023. Even though other versions of the character may have appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
