Quote1 This is captain Richard Davis -- the best blasted pilot the air force ever had... He was my commanding officer and mentor and trainer and everything else. He made me the pilot I am today! Quote2
Hal Jordan src

Richard Davis was a veteran test pilot and temporary vice-president of Ferris Aircraft.

Rich Davis was veteran war pilot who flew in Korea, Berlin, and Vietnam.[1] He taught Hal Jordan everything he knew, and young Jordan became a pilot thanks to his help. Years passed and he retired from being a pilot, and Carl Ferris hired him to be vice-president of Ferris Aircraft.[2]

As his health got worse and worse, Rich grew desperate to fly a jet one last time. Moved by envy, he slugged Hal Jordan unconscious and took his place for a test flight of Bruce Gordon's Solar-Powered Jet. Succeeding on his flight, he suddenly got abducted by Eclipso and his Murder Moon. With the help of Bruce Gordon himself, Rich managed to escape the satellite, although his plane received some damage. Rich was forced to take a huge risk and land the jet on the desert. He succeeded, but the strain was too much for his weak heart. Hand clinging to the stick, Rich died in the pilot's seat when the plane stopped moving.[3]
