Robin (Volume 2) #85 is an issue of the series Robin (Volume 4) with a cover date of February, 2001.

Synopsis for "Fool's Errand"

Between delivering ever-more exaggerated lies about his childhood to the therapists at Slabside Penitentiary, the Joker discusses his history with the Robins, including the growth of the first, the murder of the second, and his first defeat at the hands of the third. As he shares his story, the Joker comes to wonder if multiple Batmen exist as well, and whether he really has managed to kill several of them.

Eventually, the Joker shatters the one-way glass separating him and his therapists, only to begin hallucinating that Slabside's staff is composed entirely of Robins. Slabside's guards quickly beat the Joker into submission and throw him into solitary confinement, where he is free to share his latest stories with a cockroach on the floor.

Notes

  • This issue was part of the "This Issue: Batman Dies!!!" event, during which every "Batman family" book cover-dated February 2001 would contain at least one panel depicting Batman's death in some fashion. In this issue, the panel is a full-page spread of the Joker imagining whether he had killed Batman (and numerous successors) in his past schemes after all.
  • While the Joker's discussion of the first Robin does not reference any particular story, his discussion of the second references "A Death in the Family", and his discussion of the third references the Robin II: The Joker's Wild! mini-series.
