Salima Baranizar was chosen by the Guardians of the Universe, the creators of the Green Lantern Corps, who planned to create their successors, a race of new Guardians on Earth.
History
One of the Guardians and a Zamaron, the Guardians' female counterparts, intended to choose ten individuals who they would teach about the nature of the cosmos and endow with immortality and metahuman powers. One of these was Salima Baranizar. Before she could realize her destiny and despite the efforts of Blue Beetle, she was stoned to death by her countrymen, who, like she, had been raised to hate the United States. Despite her death, Baranizir can still be seen in Dreamtime by the New Guardian Betty Clawman.
