Compton

Compton was the butler to Roderick Burgess.

Daniel

Daniel is the physical son of Hector and Lyta Hall. He is the reincarnated essence of Dream whose existence ended due to a curse that forbad any member of the Endless from taking the life of their own blood.

Daniel Bustamonte

Daniel Bustamonte was a man from Kingston, Jamaica. In 1916 when Dream was imprisoned, Daniel began suffering from sleeping sickness. He dreamed that he was floating up into the sky to a magic castle in the clouds. He languished in the streets of Kingston a veritable zombie for more than seventy years. In September of 1988 when Dream escaped confinement, Daniel "woke up".

Death

Death is one of the seven members of the Endless. She is the personification of death who ferries wayward spirits to the afterworld.

Delight

Delight is one of the original seven members of the Endless. She later evolved into the being known as Delirium.

Desire

Despair

Despair is one of the seven members of the Endless. The ugliest of family members, she is the personification of hopelessness.

Destiny

Destruction is one of the seven members of the Endless. He is the personification of war and mayhem.

Dream

Edmond Hathaway

Edmond Hathaway was a soldier in the British Navy fighting during World War I. In May of 1916, his destroyer was sunk off the coast of Jutland. In June of that year, his father Professor John Hathaway petitioned Roderick Burgess to use his magic to resurrect his dead son.

Ellie Marston

Ellie Marston was a young girl from Toronto, Canada. In 1916 when Dream was imprisoned, Ellie fell into a deep sleep from which she could not awaken. In 1939 she was moved to a charity ward. In 1955, she was diagnosed with Encephalitis Lethargica. She wakened only four or five times a year. Mentally, she was still eight-years-old. In 1968, she was moved to a hospital that specialized in Encephalitis cases.

The Fashion Thing is a denizen of the Dreaming. She is the personification of style and design.

John Hathaway

Doctor John Hathaway was the senior curator of the Royal Museum in the early 1900s. In 1916, he stole the Magdalene Grimoire and gave it to occultist Roderick Burgess with the hopes that he would use it to resurrect his dead son Edmund. Burgess failed in this endeavor, but spent the next four years blackmailing Hathaway for every penny he had. In 1920, John Hathaway committed suicide. He left behind a note implicating Roderick Burgess of blackmail and the theft of the Grimoire. Burgess was acquitted of all charges.

Paul McGuire

Paul McGuire was the friend and probable lover to Alexander Burgess. He was Alex's second-in-command of the Order of Ancient Mysteries, though Paul never really believed in black magic. Though loyal to Burgess, he saw the order as merely an efficient means of parting the credulous from their money. In 1970, Burgess handed over complete control of the Order to Paul, but by that time the cult had virtually disappeared. Paul remained with Alex until the fateful day when Dream cursed the latter with Eternal Waking.

Raven Woman

Ruthven Sykes

Ruthven Sykes was the second-in-command to the Order of Ancient Mysteries and worked under the tutelage of magus Roderick Burgess. In 1930, Sykes betrayed his oath, and ran off with several mystical artifacts, including Dream's Helm. Ethel Cripps, former mistress to Roderick Burgess, ran off with Sykes and the two lived together in San Francisco for six years. Sykes bartered with the demon Choronzon for protection against the revenge-driven Burgess. Choronzon enchanted the Dreamstone and told Sykes that for as long as he wore it, Burgess could not harm him. In exchange, Sykes gave Choronzon Dream's helm. In 1936, Ethel Cripps left Sykes and took the Dreamstone from him. Roderick Burgess learned that Ruthven was now vulnerable and used his magic to kill him.

Stefan Wasserman

Stefan Wasserman was born in 1902. At thirteen he lied about his age to enlist in the military and fight in World War I. In 1916, when Dream was imprisoned, Wasserman suffered a unique form of shell shock. Unlike others affected by Dream's capture, Stefan could not fall asleep. In 1917 he was discharged from active service. In 1918, unable to cope with his lack of sleep, he took his own life. He was only sixteen.
