Synopsis for "The Mist: Act Four"

Jonathan Smythe presents his disintegration device to the Army, they don't buy it, but his gangland employers (whom he's enraged in a complicated sub-plot) subject him to his own (malfunctioning) machine for failing them. Then they stupidly don't stick around long enough to see this treatment fail to kill him, although there IS a delayed-action effect of partially disintegrating him. He flees as far as Opal City before he apparently disintegrates. Ted Knight and Wes Dodds learn that "Smythe" was not his real name. At story's end, Weiss & Cohen's operation is still in business.

Notes

  • Jonathan Smythe was an adopted name for a Canadian WWI veteran who was awarded a Victoria Cross. Wes and Ted never did work out his real identity.
  • The Victoria Cross that Wes finds comes into play again in Starman Vol 2. The Mist tells Jack Knight that she intended to locate the missing medal which prompts Jack to track it down during the Sand and Stars story.
