Synopsis for "The Gnawing Part One"

Officer Falls Down sits with Granny Poor Bear on her front porch and listens to her tell a Lakota fable about how the great white grandfather beaver is always gnawing at the great pole that holds up the world.

At the White Haven Sheriff's office, Dashiel Bad Horse arrives to try and extradite Diesel. The White Haven sheriff's don't cooperate. Instead, they release another prisoner into Bad Horse's custody. This prisoner is Catcher. On the ride back to Praire Rose Reservation, Catcher tells Bad Horse that he talked to Bad Horse's mother today. Bad Horse replies that his mother is dead. Catcher replies that he knows and the he also knows that Bad Horse sometimes talks to her too. Catcher tells Bad Horse to quit the drugs and to stop seeing Red Crow's daughter. He also tells Bad Horse that he is going to have to kill a lot of people, but Catcher is willing to help with that. During this exchange, an eagle flies at the windshield. Bad Horse swerves to miss it and hits a tree. When he gets out of the car he finds Catcher is gone.

Back at the Prairie Rose Police station, Mr. Brass is locked in a jail cell. Shunka tells Red Crow that they have to prepare for war with the Hmongs after what they've done to Mr. Brass and his subordinates. Bad Horse returns at that moment and Red Crow calls him into his office. Red Crow asks Bad Horse if he's ever heard of an FBI Agent Nitz. Red Crow then tells him there's a rat on the rez and charges Bad Horse with finding him. Bad Horse acts indifferent, without meeting Red Crow's eyes, then he walks out into the carpark and vomits.

Bad Horse calls Nitz and tells him Red Crow knows. Nitz tells Bad Horse to sit tight and wait until he witnesses Red Crow killing someone before the FBI comes in. After Bad Horse hangs up the phone, Nitz tells another agent that he is the one who leaked the information to Red Crow in the hopes that Red Crow would do something incriminating and then they could rush in and arrest him.

Red Crow takes a call from Johnny Tongue, the leader of the Hmongs, who tells him in no uncertain terms to release Mr. Brass, give him two million dollars and send him on his way. Red Crow refuses and Tongue begins a rant loaded with insults. Red Crow walks to the prison cell with the cell phone in his hand, the line open. He hands the phone to a smiling Mr. Brass and then shoots him four times. Tongue gets his men together and prepares for war.
