The Scarlet Jungle was an inhospitable wild area in the center of the continent of Lurvan on the planet Krypton. Many unusual and deadly creatures lived there, and a traveller risked life and limb - whether from Thought-Beasts; the scourge of Scarlet Jungle Fever; or the Fire Falls.
History
Earth-One
Young Kal-El was accidentally teleported into the Scarlet Jungle, and, through accident, managed to avoid being eaten by a Thought-Beast or turned to stone by a Rainbow-Bolt firing creature.[1]
Decades later, in a battle with Lex Luthor, Superman remembered evading the Moving Forests in the Scarlet Jungle and used the same tactic to avoid giant mutated cacti.[2]
The Scarlet Jungle Fever was a constant and deadly danger. Both Jor-El and Superman contracted it. The symptoms included high fever, delirium and susceptibility to suggestion. In his fever, Jor-El nearly released the Phantom Zone Criminals[3] and, in Kandor, Superman had to be stopped from blurting out his secret identity while in the throes of delirium.[1]
While the diseases could be deadly - especially the diabolical Bloodmorel[4] - there were also cures hidden in the Scarlet Jungle, such as the fungus spore-dust that Jax-Ur used to cure the blotchy plague that afflicted Lori Lemaris and her Atlantean brethren.[5]
The dense undergrowth, untamed animals and deadly diseases, made the Jungle one of the least explored places on Krypton.[6]. Thus, hidden beneath the Scarlet Jungle was a "Security Arsenal" of forbidden, terrible weapons and devices that no one wanted found.[7]
