Sector 666 was one of 3600 sectors into which the Guardians of the Universe had divided the universe. Each sector was assigned one, and later two, members of the Green Lantern Corps.
History
One of the few things that make Sector 666 special is that it was the site of one of the worst bloodbaths in the history of the universe, when the robotic Manhunters killed all life in it when a simultaneous glitch made them believe they had to exterminate all life in the sector to complete their quest. Although the Guardians of the Universe managed to stop the Manhunters before they could move to another sector, only five beings survived. This horrifying event was the genesis of the dreaded Empire of Tears and ultimately of its reborn successor, the Red Lantern Corps.
