Synopsis for "From This World to That Which is to Come"

Klarion Bleak was born in Limbo Town, a subterranean village inhabited by witches, that worships a mysterious entity named Croatoan. Necromancy is very common, as the town resurrects their dead in the form of a "Grundy", which acts as a mindless worker. Every witch-man, witch-woman and witch-child also has their own draaga, or familiar.

With Klarion's biological father having disappeared years earlier, Klarion always suspected there was a world beyond Limbo Town, but was vigorously discouraged from asking questions by the strict Submissionary Judah.

One day, a spine-rider of the The Sheeda is found in the mouth of Klarion's familiar, Teekl, and the town panics, convinced that the spine-rider had been sent in advance of their extermination. Judah disagrees with the town's "Witch-man Parliament", which he sees as a threat to the old ways of fear and submission to Croatoan. In fear of being retired from duty, as well as the Sheeda invasion, Judah and the other Submissionaries transform themselves into a Horigal, a monstrous gestalt form bonding the three of them and their familiars together. They attack all the witch-men in town, including Klarion's stepfather Ezekiel. Klarion finds their bodies, but is attacked by Horigal.
