History
Sherlock Holmes is largely considered the father of modern criminal investigation. Active in London, England during the latter half of the 19th century, Holmes became world renowned for his intellectual prowess and his skillful use of deductive reasoning. He solved dozens of investigations for British law enforcement ranging from petty theft to murder. He often worked alongside his close friend and physician, Doctor John Watson.
Near the turn of the century, Holmes went into retirement and became a recluse. Miraculously, Holmes survived well into the late 20th century, due in large part to Oriental meditation techniques and clean living. He had long since quit smoking tobacco and only carried his trademark calabash pipe as a memento. In (publishing year) 1987 Holmes (well over a hundred) met the famed costumed detective Batman, as well as the Elongated Man and Slam Bradley. The group worked closely together on a case that came to be known as the "Doomsday Book" case.
Powers and Abilities
Abilities
- Genius-Level Intellect: Holmes is a brilliant, virtually peerless, detective, strategist, scientist.
- Master Detective: He was widely considered as the World's Greatest Detective, capable of observation, forensic investigation, and inductive and deductive reasoning of the highest caliber. Human intuition is an unlearnable trait and one of Holmes most effective tools. Given any mystery, he can arrive at any conclusions with a fraction of the data.
- Master of Disguise: Mastered the art of disguise which he used to infiltrate the underworld or just to go undercover in public situations.
Notes
- The character of Sherlock Holmes was originally created by Scottish writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The comic version of Holmes was created by Mike W. Barr and Alan Davis.
- On Earth-AD, there exists an anthropomorphised version of Holmes named Mylock Bloodstalker. Mylock and his assistant Doile (an analog to Watson) first appeared in Kamandi #52.
- In the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories, Holmes encountered a criminal mastermind named James Moriarty. Moriarty was seen as part of Earth-One continuity in Detective Comics #110. It is unknown if Moriarty's existence is preserved in canonical Post-Crisis continuity.
- The character of Sherlock Holmes also played a minor role in the 1999 limited series, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (published under the America's Best Comics imprint).
- Very little is known of Sherlock's extended family tree, but there is evidence to suggest that he may have a modern era descendant named Derek Holmes. Like Sherlock, Derek was a skilled British detective, but whereas Sherlock maintained a private practice, Derek claimed to be an actual English investigator. Batman met Derek Holmes years before his encounter with his more distinguished ancestor, when the Caped Crusader accepted a case on behalf of Scotland Yard. Derek Holmes and Batman solved a murder mystery out on the English Moors and Derek even commented about how impressed he was with Batman's utility belt. The two parted company soon after, but when Batman inquired about Derek's association with Scotland Yard, he discovered that they had no record of any such individual. The true identity of Derek Holmes, and his association (if any) to Sherlock Holmes remains unknown.
