Synopsis for "Faith, Hope, and Charity"

Following last issue, John Lynch is observing the messenger in an interrogation room being grilled for releasing government information to foreign enemies. Marc Slayton then enters and confers that Lynch's scheme in contacting Holden had failed. But, Lynch points out that it didn't failed as I.O.'s superhuman operatives that were killed by Holden's Hounds were corrupt, and that the messenger is being imprisoned and silence for his treachery. And also, Holden for leaving the messenger alive shows that he is still good and restraint on his methods. Though Marc is highly doubtful, Lynch is sure that Holden will accept his invitation into Egypt.

Meanwhile, in Egypt, Holden is accompanied by two Syndicate Blackguards, and goes to Lynch's meeting in Cairo. It is then reveal from Holden that he kept one thing from Tao. The address for the meeting is not where Lynch wanted to meet. It was the address of Diamanda M'Batu, the one-time queen of Egypt, who planned the assault on the FBI warehouse and for causing Genocide Jones' death. Suspecting that it is for his chance to kill Diamanda in vengeance. The reason for keeping this secret from Tao remains unsure for Holden, but suspects Lynch knew he would.

Holden tracks the address to a hotel. Suddenly his Blackguards are killed by sniper fire. Holden then runs for cover and to where the sniper is. After losing from the police, Holden arrives to the building where the sniper is. But realizes that he is being deliberately lured there, and finds an abandoned sniper rifle and a letter, revealing that the sniper was Veronica St. James, reading to meet her at the Cairo Tower.

Once meeting Veronica, Holden learns from her that she still believes that he isn't at heart, but having a hard time to deal that he is now a renegade operative. Veronica tries to sway him from working for the Syndicate, but Holden points out that I.O. is no different from Tao's organization for its "covert imperialism", and that the world is nothing to both Tao and Lynch as a game. Holden also learns to his shock from Veronica that her marriage with Alan failed after the truth about Holden came through. However, Veronica still has hope for Holden. Veronica provides Holden a phone number in which there will be a message of instructions for how Lynch will reach Holden, and that he said of talking to Diamanda. Suddenly, Holden see Veronica's former husband and his agent had followed them. Held at gunpoint by Alan and his men, Holden, knowing that he must send a message to Veronica that he is not the man he is, quickly subdue the other agents and viciously attack Alan. Once Veronica tells Holden to stop, she see through his well meaning intentions as Holden leaves the scene.
