Powers
Energy Absorption: Able to absorb the negative emotions of intelligent beings including emotions such as terror and fear. In addition, he is able to absorb the releasing of energy through burning planets in nearby stars. Without the energy of negative emotions and energy, he will become virtually human. He can even absorb energy from stars.
- Divine Empowerment: Shadow Thief's powers were vastly enhanced [by Starbreaker] and because of that he nearly destroyed the Justice League of America, the Shadow Cabinet, and Hawkman. [1]

Able to sling entire planets into stars (Telekinesis)
Although not completely immune to magic, it would take a mystic of incredible power to attack Starbreaker with a hostile spell and succeed. Zatanna tried to use the spell "Disperse" or "Esrepsid" to try and destroy him but all it did was hurt him a little bit and knocked him to the ground.
Weaknesses
While feeding on negative emotions can strengthen him, he grows weaker and slowly loses all his powers when he is surrounded by numerous and overwhelming amount of positive emotions. Eventually he will become no more powerful than a human if continued exposure to positive emotions.

- Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985-86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact.
