"The Legion's Super-Secret": While the Legion battles Sklarian techno-raiders, Brainiac 5 tries to keep from Superboy a secret that could destroy the 20th Century.

Quote1 The judge is right. Our concern for Wildfire is no defense... Were we wrong to obey Brainiac 5's orders without question? Was Wildfire any more deserving of life than Redvik Chang? I don't know. How can right and wrong become so confused? Dear god... Are we murderers? Quote2

Notes

  • Doctor B'relden indicates that at least some of the Legionnaires at this point are already in their 20s, and that the only reason why they continue to use codenames containing juvenile additions like "Boy," "Lad," etc. is to deceive Superboy in order so he doesn't learn of the 30th century's age-retarding technologies. This explanation is not necessarily the one in widespread "official" usage going forward, and the Legion of Super-Heroes would continue to be marketed for several years as a team of "super-teens."

Trivia

  • One of the Sklarians in the first story dismissively refers to Light Lass as a "Terran" although she is actually a Winathian.
  • Superboy is deceived by Brainiac 5 and Cosmic Boy's phony explanation at the end of the first story, that they were brainwashing him to protect the secret of how to synthetically create life, rather than the truth of extending it. However, Lex Luthor already created the first synthetic life-form, a Protoplasm, in the 20th Century. From the context, it can be assumed that synthetic human life was closer to what was meant.
