Superman/Batman #44 is an issue of the series Superman/Batman (Volume 1) with a cover date of February, 2008.

Synopsis for "K - Chapter 1: Strange Favor"

The story opens on a rooftop in Gotham City where a movie shoot is taking place for a Superman/Batman film called World's Finest. Superman is amused while Batman is not. As they prepare for the kryptonite scene, Livewire interrupts the scene and takes "Batman" hostage with the intent of ransoming him to himself for half of his $12 million dollar paycheck. Superman intervenes and in the fracas, the kryptonite (which is revealed to be real) explodes and embeds itself into Superman's face. Livewire takes advantage of the situation and topples the water tower on the roof. Batman issues a code red to the JLA and Flash (Wally West) assists and prevents disaster. Batman takes down Livewire but Superman is severely injured.

Flash rushes Superman to the Fortress of Solitude where Alfred Pennyworth removes the shards of kryptonite from Superman's face. Superman is distraught. What should be a comfort to him is instead a deadly threat. Superman and Batman then part ways - Batman returns to Gotham City while Superman heals (with the help of the sun) in the Fortress.

Three days later, Superman returns to Gotham City (sporting a cool eye patch and recovered from the blood poisoning) and requests a strange favor from Batman - Assist him in rounding up all the kryptonite in the world and then pitch it into the sun. Batman is, at first, reluctant ("I'm not human, Bruce." says Superman. "Kryptonite is what makes you close," replies Batman.) After a short discussion, Batman agrees to help.

The scene shifts to the JLA Watchtower in orbit over Earth. Batman has calibrated the JLA satellite to identify kryptonite's beta decay signature. The plan is to identify where the kryptonite is and then move it to a storage container in Nebraska.

But the job is a little bigger than they once thought. The results of the scan show that the entire Earth is covered.

  • This issue shipped on December 19th, 2007.
  • Includes DC Nation editorial #92 by Dan DiDio. DiDio provides a Christmas wish-list for the DC Universe.
  • This issue establishes that exposure to Green Kryptonite can have mutagenic effects on normal Earth humans. Previously, incidental exposure had no affect on humans, though prolonged direct contact could induce Kryptonite poisoning.

Trivia

  • Clark makes reference to large supplies of Kryptonite that were once found in Smallville. He further states that the Kryptonite seemed to generate a "freak every week". This is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the WB/CW television series Smallville, where Kryptonite has frequently been used as a plot device. For the first few seasons, characters exposed to Kryptonite (usually referred to as meteor rock) developed bizarre powers, giving rise to the fan-derived neologism "freak of the week".
