Synopsis for "Pawns"

In the Caribbean, Superman thinks he has captured Lex Luthor, but it turns out to be a booby-trapped robot. At S.T.A.R. Labs, the staff is astonished to see on the news that Luthor is indeed alive and on the loose, especially one Dr. Freeman, who personally witnessed his vegetative state for months.

Meanwhile, Harold Vekko is examining Luthor's seemingly fantastic recovery. In the background, the news turns to a special on the Alpha Centurion, which is at that time being viewed by the Contessa.

Superman, who has already delivered the remnants of the Luthor robot to Emil Hamilton for examination, pays a visit to the Professor. Hamilton is currently finishing a "robotic housing" for the villain Arclight, who is headed into federal custody. This event is covered by Jimmy Olsen on GBS, and is observed by the staff of the Daily Planet.

The Contessa reveals herself to the mysterious host of a banquet to which the Centurion has been invited. The two share a glass of wine, and it obvious that the Contessa has plans for the hero.

Over the Atlantic, Luthor finds an unwelcome guest on his plane. The shadowy figure refers to a "mutual benefactor", who is apparently responsible for Lex's return to the peak of health -- and now holds that over his head in exchange for Luthor's services.

Superman's search for Luthor next leads him to the remains of an island estate on the eastern coast of the U.S., where he finds the Centurion and the Contessa together. Again, the Man of Steel is met with treachery -- first, a holographic warning from his arch-nemesis, and then another bomb. The three are unscathed, and Superman, more determined than ever, follows Luthor's trail to Iceland.

Luthor then isolates Dr. Torval Freeman in a chamber, partly for revenge, and partly to coax out the dormant power of the Parasite.
