Synopsis for "I Have Seen the Splintered Timbers of a Hundred Shattered Hulls"

This issue begins at midnight on board the SS Haven at the moment of unmasking at the masquerade ball (from the previous issue) and it is discovered that many of the party goers are one-eyed monsters. The monsters begin to attack and the Sunderland Corporation Executive Committee escape on a hydrofoil. Before escaping with the rest of the Executive Committee, Harry Kay gives Dennis Barclay a gun and tells the other executives that Barclay and Liz Tremayne were killed, protecting them from being hunted by the Sunderland Corporation any longer. Barclay and Tremayne make their way to to ship's sick bay to analyze the monsters' blood.

While this is happening, Swamp Thing discovers a large sea monster in the depths of the ship. By telepathic means, it explains to him that it arrived on earth as a microscopic organism on a spaceship that landed in the ocean and mutated when it came into contact with an experimental strain of herpes virus (a Sunderland Corporation cargo ship sank with the virus on board). The alien now continues to spread it's virus by infecting humans and destroying passing ships in an attempt to rebuild it's own spaceship to go home. The monster then tries to infect the Swamp Thing but his blood seems to cause the monster massive pain and he manages to escape. Swamp Thing then decides to makes his way to the medical bay to try to treat himself.

Meanwhile, somewhere in the Everglades Milton, (who is pursuing Karen Clancy) is knocked unconscious by Karen who has significantly improved psychic abilities. It is alluded that Karen is now going through some change and has some mission in which she believes Paul Feldner and Swamp Thing play a role.

Back on the SS Haven, Barclay creates a bomb that has a serum of Swamp Things blood. The Swamp Thing then dives to the ocean depths and destroys the monster in a huge underwater explosion. Barclay and Tremayne escape on a life boat and Swamp Thing finds himself on the shore of a strange island that apparently has living dinosaurs.
