Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a island off the coast of the mainland People's Republic of China. Both claim to be the real China.
History
The Republic of China was created in 1949. In a bitter conflict, Mao Tse-Tung forced the Nationalist forces under General Chang Kai-Shek off the mainland. They set up their own country on the island of Taiwan (known in the west as Formosa). For the decades that followed it, there was a fragile peace between the two, that quickly became a stalemate.[1] On at least two occasions, the Nationalist government and population of Taiwan were successfully defended by the famous Blackhawk Squadron against aggression from Red China.[2][3]
