Black Adam was a previous champion of Shazam and an enemy of Captain Marvel.

Black Adam was a pupil of the wizard Shazam, and gained divine empowerment by saying the wizard's name. However, his powers corrupted him, and when he tried to take over the world, Shazam banished him to the edge of the universe for 5000 years. After the spell wore off, he flew back to Earth and resumed his plans to conquer it. He was confronted by the Marvel Family, but they were at a stalemate because their powers canceled each others' out. Eventually Black Adam was tricked into saying "Shazam," which caused him to revert to his mortal form. Because he was thousands of years old, his human body had decayed to dust.

Later, through unknown means, Black Adam returned to life and tried to destroy North America by causing a massive volcanic eruption.
