Synopsis for "Futures End - Chapter 5"

Every third Wednesday of June for the past several years, Terrifitech has unveiled its next generation of hardware to the public. When the time comes for his speech, Michael Holt explains that he has developed a device that will unite the people of both Earths since the war: the uSphere. The device acts as a backup for the human brain, and it will allow average people to bring out their potential.

Cole Cash, meanwhile, has been laid up in Sutters Cove, Maryland thanks to a bullet in the spine from King Faraday. Cole had been offered the opportunity to become America's next serial killer sweetheart - and the paralyzing bullet-wound was the guarantee that Cole would take that offer. He will walk again if he accepts - not that he has a choice either way. After gagging Cole so he won't keep interrupting, Faraday leaves Cole's new partner to explain the scenario.

Elsewhere, on Cadmus Island, a pair of OMACs are in pursuit of Fury, a refugee from Earth 2. In short order, she tears them apart. However, despite that success, she finds herself face to face with Cole's new partner - a teenage girl. The girl is unimpressed at Fury's having feigned illness in order to escape, not to mention her having killed Molly Hutchins, whom she liked. Without warning, the girl blasts Fury with heat-vision, before returning to her sulking over having to partner with a man with one eye.

In New York, Firestorm brags to his partner Jason about his experiences at the Playboy Mansion, but receives no response. Jason, trapped by Ronnie in the Firestorm Matrix is beyond hearing Ronnie's voice, choosing instead to meditate. He is only snapped out of it when Ronnie returns to his home, and leaves the Matrix, freeing Jason in the process. Naturally, Jason is angry with him, having spent weeks trapped in the Firestorm Matrix, missing his finals in the process. He had been betrayed, just as Oliver Queen had also been betrayed by Ronnie's selfishness. Angrily, Ronnie reminds that he lost someone he did care about - his mother - in the war. The emotional outburst leads both men to decide that their partnership is over. Neither of them will enter the Firestorm Matrix again.

As Jason enters the university, he is spotted by Dr. Yamakaze, who comments that he has been looking everywhere for him. Jason offers a family emergency as an excuse, which is accepted. Excitedly, Dr. Yamakaze offers to show him everything he missed. In the doctor's lab, he explains that since the war, he has been developing a transporter system, annoyed that the Justice League has had a monopoly on such advanced technology to this point. However, he has since made such a great discovery that his project will surely eclipse Terrifitech's uSpheres in terms of importance.

Elsewhere, John Constantine is both surprised and displeased to discover that he's in Kansas; summoned by a woman named Midge - an old acquaintance. Taking in his surroundings, he realizes that he's in the middle of a corn-field - or rather, in the middle of a crop circle. This, he determines is a killing field, where nine people were killed to create these spaces where no crops would grow. There are two other such circles connected to the one in which they are standing, linked by lines. The symbol portends something that makes the prospect of dying of cancer from smoking seem preferable.
