Sandman is the legacy name of several different characters in the DC Universe. The original was Wesley Dodds, a Golden Age vigilante who wore a gas-mask and used a gun that put people to sleep. He was a member of the Justice Society and All-Star Squadron, and would later be succeeded by his side-kick Sandy. Garrett Sanford also used the name, fighting as a hero in the dream dimension. It is also one of the many names used by Dream of the Endless, the personification of dreaming. Wesley Dodds was created by Gardner Fox and Bert Christman, first appearing in Adventure Comics #40. (1939) Jack Kirby reinvented the character as Garrett Sanford in Sandman #1. (1974) Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg began using the name for their Dream concept in Sandman (Volume 2) #1.
