  • I was thinking that maybe such template could be useful for articles that have a specific section of the article unsourced. For example: the Helmet of Fate article has a history section and another section listing the various powers granted by the helmet; all of them unsourced. (I included that message box and this idea came to my head)

Deleting that info would reduce the article's value, and adding the standard {{Cn}} or {{Citation}} to every single point would create a messy article, and nobody wants to do it. Another example is the Kent Family article, in which the Family Members section doesn't have a single source. There are also articles like the White Lantern Corps, Orange Lantern Corps (New Earth), LexCorp and Wayne Enterprises. All of them with a lot info, some sourced, some unsourced.

    The difference between the "new template" vs the standard ones, is that it would resemble other templates like the {{Copy Edit}} one. I just think it's more visually compelling than the Cn or Citation and it would be more specific that the {{Clean Up}}

Any thoughts maybe? Or have I, once again, plowed the sea?

    • I understand your point about not wanting to remove chunks of info because it hurts the page. The problem is, unless the original author does the work, often no one knows what the original source is and it sits there like that. Not saying it's a bad idea, just pointing out how it usually works. As for the coding side of it, I have no idea.

    • I definitely see the value of that, but on the other hand, I feel like a page cluttered with {{Cn}} tags SCREAMS to be fixed - which is what we want.

But here's a thought. What if the Citation Needed template had an optional variable that would trigger a particular category. Like "Category:Citation Needed/Powers & Abilities" or "Category:Citation Needed/History" - and then, anyone who's really looking to fix citations of a certain kind could look in those.

Might not be that useful, since, like Kyle said, fixing a citation is more a matter of knowing something by chance.

It might be worthwhile to make a single "This article is in need of sources for its claims" type box at the top of the page, but without {{Cn}} to show which things specifically need sources, it's not that useful to go by section over by sentence.

Maybe combine those ideas. If the template is just typed without any indication, a general message shows up. If you type something like "History" or "Powers", it would create the wanted category. Similar to the Delete template.

I just think it would be more useful for particular articles like the ones I mentioned, where it is quite clear where are no citations and we shouldn't go tagging the article with Cn after every paragraph or item in a list. We want that info sourced, but as Kyle pointed out, most of times it just sits there, despite the Cn.

Those articles are there already and the Cn tags are going to be there as well, but those aren't particularly noticed and the main purpose of this message box would be to let people know the article lack sources in general. (Also, this shouldn't be used on articles with very few unsourced info)

    • You might be right. A single "Citation Needed" banner template that has a variable to indicate where the citation is most required might help on pages where there is NO citation at all, or only in one section - and {{Cn}} as a supplement to it, in cases where we can narrow it to one sentence or paragraph.

    • I was trying to come up with ideas for the banner, and managed to create these two options. I basically replicated the Copy Edit template and changed elements to meet the requirements. However, the variable is a bit too hard for my lacking knowledge about coding and stuff. ... So basically I did the easy/fun part.

Following the model of almost all other banners, the first one is the "Riddler Banner". Who better to encourage people to find the answers?

      Riddler 0008
      DC Rebirth Logo

      Citation Needed
"When? How? Where? What? Why? - Life's full of questions, isn't it?"
The/This section of the article contains information that has not been verified. You can help the DC Database by adding reliable sources in order to bring this article to a higher standard of quality.

The second one is the "Question Banner"; because it gives that feeling that something's missing.

The Question Vol 2 3 Textless
      DC Rebirth Logo

      Citation Needed
"For certain questions, sometimes there is no answer at all."

If we decide to go along with the idea, feel free to pick any of those. Or, if you'd like something different, just go for it.

    • I like the banners. My only concern is that wider use of them might make people think adding one is a substitution for actually adding sources. That's not a reason not to make these though.

    • I prefer the Riddler one. The Question one implies that there are some "citations needed" that don't have answers...

I can insert the code for the secondary variables, if you have a template somewhere.

    • Kyle - I see what you mean. I also don't want a situation like the -incomplete- Teen Titans (Prime Earth) page. However, banners like the Clean Up and Copy Edit are generally added by us (sysops). I'd like to imagine that would be the case for this new banner.

Rab - I didn't get that last part. You mean that we're good to go? Or do you mean a particular existent template?

    • I assumed the banners you made had template pages somewhere - they do, don't they? If so, where? If I know where the template page is located, I can edit it, and such. :P

    • I had not created the template pages yet, since I considered best to wait for approval. Anyway, here's the new page Template:Citation Needed
