With "The Sandman Universe #1" coming out, it seems that this is the same Sandman from Dark Nights Metal, which we classify as Prime Earth. How will this effect other characters such as Lucifer, who will also be appearing? Neil Gaiman stated in the DC All Access interview that the rest of Lucifer's history still happened, meaning this is the same as "New Earth" Lucifer, yet he technically currently exists in Prime Earth. This would also mean Lucifer Morningstar (Prime Earth) is retconned since that was a very brief and different incarnation of the character. The only thing I can think of is classifying these types of characters as (Sphere of the Gods) and merging the NE/PE Daniel Hall pages under this, although I do remember admins saying they didn't want to do (Sphere of the Gods) a while ago, so I'm not sure how this should be handled.
That would work, but at the same time it makes it feel unconnected my opinion. How would you feel about labeling the characters as Prime Earth, as we've done with Daniel Hall (Prime Earth). We could include a section on the Lucifer page about how the new 52 history may or may not have happened. Similar to the Prime Earth Eobard Thawne situation.
If you don't mind me asking, what was the reason you didn't want to go with sphere of gods for characters like Lucifer and Dream who have shown to exist in both NE and PE, unaffected by Flashpoint (considering the Lucifer retcon)? I think that'd be less confusing to some others.
EDIT: Now that i'm thinking about it, Vertigo Universe does seem to be the best bet, but it does give me the feeling that it is unconnected to PE. If we do go with this, we would have to change all NE character pages that appear in the Sandman Universe titles to Vertigo Universe, right? Otherwise I think it'd be confusing to have a mix of the two.
The distinction between Vertigo and DC didn't come until Brightest Day, when John Constantine walked in fresh from the pages of Swamp Thing (rather than pushing 70 like in Hellblazer). We didn't bother to retroactively change anything else, especially because the border is hazy.
We might need to index which pages require a split/merge/move first. For example, Green Arrow's Vertigo stuff isn't Vertigo Universe. And there are plenty of minor appearances of mainstream heroes in Swamp Thing, Sandman and Hellblazer - would they need separate pages?
Well, since we're treating (Vertigo Universe) as more of a way to label, rather than distinguish universes, since it is more or less the same universe as NE/PE, I would say we can leave the heroes who made cameos. Is there a bot or easier way to rename all the pages that need it, or will it all have to be done manually?
I believe the only page that needs to be merged is Daniel Hall. I think we could possibly merge the Vertigo and NE Constantine pages. Can't think of anything that'd need a split. Swamp Thing? Not sure, I've never read much of him.
As an alternative, we could also only label characters like the Sandman entities, Lucifer and other angels, etc. as (Vertigo) to clarify, since those are the main characters who will be appearing in the newer comics. Then we could either leave their supporting characters as New Earth, similar to how the characters in Hellblazer Vol 1 are labeled. If any new characters make appearances in the Sandman Universe comics we can call them PE since it's current continuity. Although as I said, this is just an alternative.
Cool. How did you want to handle the Vertigo supporting characters? Leave the old ones that either appear or don't appear in the Sandman Universe comics as New Earth and label newly created characters as Prime Earth?
