Transmat is the colloquial term for the Long Range Matter Transmitter, a teleportation technology developed in recent times by the highly advanced galactic civilization known as the Cooperative. The device enables instantaneous travel over interstellar distances. When activated, the Transmat creates a teleportation channel resembling a vortex of swirling red energy that is normally suspended in space. A person will then step through the channel's opening as if it were a doorway and emerge on the other side at his intended destination. The orientation of the opening can be adjusted so that it is parallel to horizontal surfaces like floors and ceilings. In this case, the person would enter the channel as if he were going down into a swimming pool or climbing a flight of stairs.
The maximum of people the Transmat can teleport is unknown. However, the device has teleported two people simultaneously without problems.
The Transmat system is linked to and regulated by the Info Tool, the Cooperative's sentient interstellar computer database. By using a voice-activated local access system, the user pays a fee to the Info Tool and then tells it to open a Transmat channel to a particular destination. If the Info Tool is unfamiliar with a destination, the user will have to provide additional information like coordinates to ensure safe and accurate teleportation.
As amazing as it is, the Transmat does have some drawbacks. First, the fee necessary to access the system is extremely high, limiting its use to the very wealthy. (Presumably, as Transmat use becomes more commonplace, the fee will become more affordable.) Second, powerful energy fields create interference that prevents the Transmat from teleporting someone into or out of a location. For these reasons, Cooperative citizens often use Transmat for interstellar travel when there is an urgent need to reach their destination.
- The warlike Yoongar are familiar with Transmat technology, but it is unknown if they actually possess it.
- The Transmat still exists since the Dakotaverse was merged with the DC Universe. The only difference is that the Transmat's teleportation channel is now blue in color instead of red.
