USA, the Spirit of Old Glory, was a heroine who fought for America.

In 1776, a young girl was fascinated by the beauty of the flag when she saw Betsy Ross sew it. So eager to tell Uncle Sam and everyone else about it, she ran into the freezing rain and grew ill. As she lay dying, Betsy Ross gave her a locket with original threads from the flag, and she cherished it dearly. After she passed away, a divine decree ruled that her spirit, and that of America, would live on in the locket.

On the eve of World War II, the locket was uncovered on a grave in Pennsylvanian cemetary. As the finder opened it, USA was freed. She immediately set out to instill her flag's values, and foiled many Nazi plots, including preventing assassination attempts on the president.[1]

Word of USA and her incredible power spread quickly, with spies and criminals fearing her every appearance. However, some were able to figure out weaknesses she possessed, such as her inability to harm or damage symbols of American patriotism, such as the flag. This tactic was used by a spy ring that kidnapped a Navy lieutenant's son when they hid their car beneath an American flag to escape USA. However, she still managed to track the kidnappers down and rescue Lt. Martin's son.[2]

When she was not stopping spy rings and fifth columnists, USA worked under a civilian identity on the women's floor of a large munitions factory. She often butt heads with the forelady, Mrs. Cragg, who even tried to frame USA as a spy and saw her terminated. After USA discovered that Cragg had taken a job to destroy the factory, though, she informed the FBI and stopped Cragg and her gang, officially resigning from the munitions factory.[3]

She later found a job working under General Marshall at Fort Maxon. When two sentries went missing, USA investigated, discovering that a group had been stealthily stealing guns and ammunition from the fort. They blackmailed the general's son, Private Allen Marshall, who had acquired a substantial gambling debt. USA helped Marshall defeat the gang and returned the stolen goods.[4]
