World War II

For Britain, as for all other nations, history ran very differently in the various parallel timelines of the multiverse. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, the Allied and Axis nations were at war all across the globe, and the United States was still officially neutral. It was a difficult matter of finely-tuned diplomacy to remain that way, and extreme measures, including press censorship, were taken to preserve that status for as long as possible. These things were true in most or all of the universes.

In the Quality Universe, it briefly became commonplace for American newspapers and radio broadcasters to substitute fictional names, such as "Anglia" or "Anglica", to describe the roles played by the government or military of future U.S. allies, in order to preserve the U.S. government's posture of neutrality. The names of hostile foreign governments or military units were routinely not mentioned at all in this coverage.

Anglia

In 1941, prior to the entry of the United States into the ongoing Second World War, the "Anglian" Ambassador and several high-ranking naval officers were aboard an experimental U.S. Navy dirigible, for a well-publicized test flight, near Washington, D.C. The airship had a secret agent, of an unidentified hostile foreign power, impersonating the commanding officer, and there was a time bomb planted aboard. An American intelligence agent, Don Borden, and his secret ally the Phantom Lady, collaborated to foil this plot. Afterward, the Anglian Ambassador was very effusive in his praise of the Phantom Lady's heroics.[1]

Anglica

Later in 1941, another complex diplomatic incident was resolved by the same American intelligence agent, Don Borden, and his secret ally the Phantom Lady, and again the press reports made no mention of Britain, this time calling the future U.S. ally "Anglica".[2]

  • Sometimes referred to as "Great Britain", though that is just the eastern of the two British Isles (the other being Ireland).
