Green Lanterns
Prior to the Crisis, the most prominent Green Lantern of Earth, Hal Jordan retired from the Green Lantern Corps.[13] As his designated replacement Guy Gardner was in a coma,[14] John Stewart took up the job.[15]
During the Crisis, John Stewart was one of the first heroes enlisted by Harbinger to fight as one of the Monitor's agents to combat the Shadow Demons.[1][16] Stewart fought in the 19th Century, alongside Cyborg, Firebrand, Psimon, Jonah Hex, Bat Lash, Scalphunter, Nighthawk and Johnny Thunder.[3]
The Crisis divided the Guardians of the Universe into two separate factions, complicated by the fact that the Anti-Monitor had been created by Krona, one of their own.[7] One group of Guardians believed that the destruction of the universe was inevitable, and that to waste time fighting the Anti-Monitor was futile. The others believed it was their duty to do everything they could to preserve life. The Green Lantern Corps was thrown into chaos when the Anti-Monitor used the Central Power Battery of Oa as a weapon and murdered half of the Guardians before they could get organized.[2][16] As the Crisis wrought havoc upon the universe, many Green Lanterns were slain, including Eddore.[17] With John Stewart elsewhere occupied, Guy Gardner was appointed as the new Green Lantern of Sector 2814.[9][18]
The faction that elected Guy Gardner sent him on a mission, to destroy the moon of Qward where the Anti-Monitor was born, in an effort to destroy his last physical link to the universe. Gardner was sent to enlist a number of supervillains for his assault, and he gathered The Shark, Sonar, Hector Hammond, Throttle, Blindside and Goldface. Hal Jordan, deputized with a ring in the Crisis, was sent to help him.[17] It was shortly afterward discovered that rather than weaken him, destroying the Anti-Monitor's birthplace would allow him to go even stronger, untethered from the mortal world. When the rest of the Corps was sent to stop Gardner, Jordan and the villains, there was a massive battle on Qward between the two opposing factions. Although both Tomar-Re and Xax were killed in the conflict, Tomar passed his Green Lantern Ring onto John Stewart, allowing Hal Jordan to reclaim the ring that had originally been his and become a Green Lantern again.[19]
Green Lantern's origins were updated Post-Crisis in Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn.
