V for Vendetta is a 1988-1989 miniseries by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. It represents a dystopic future wherein England is ruled by the Fascist leadership of the Norsefire political party, years after a worldwide nuclear conflict. Headquartered in London, Norsefire's influence began with the re-election of Conservative party leader Margaret Thatcher in the general election of 1983. In the intervening years, the world was engulfed in nuclear war. England emerged from the conflict unscathed, but from the overwhelming emotion and fear of it's constituents, the Norsefire party soon came to power.

Norsefire represented hardline conservative ideals, and stressed their values through religion. The party's motto was "Strength Through Purity, Purity Through Faith". To keep the country safe, Norsefire sought out those whom they considered a threat to the establishment. Such undesirables included minorities, homosexuals, political dissidents and Muslims. Concentration camps were established throughout the English countryside, the most famous of which was the Larkhill Resettlement Camp.

One of Larkhill's prisoners was a man known only as Patient V. After being subjected to torture and scientific experimentation, V broke free of Larkhill, and set the camp aflame.

Over the next four years, V embarked upon an elaborate mission of revenge against those who imprisoned him. Donning a Guy Fawkes mask, he presented himself as a theatrical anarchist and began committing violent acts of terrorism across London. His targets included the Old Bailey building and the Palace of Westminster. During his reign of terror, V befriended a young prostitute named Evey Hammond. He took her under his wing, and used her as an accomplice in his never-ending vendetta against Norsefire.
