Quote1 My name is Wally West... and I need to be the fastest kid alive. Quote2
Wally West src

Wallace Rudolph "Ace" West III, the fourth Kid Flash, is the teenage sidekick of the Flash and the son of Daniel West, the third Reverse-Flash.

Origin

Born and raised in Richmond, West Virginia, Wallace West's early life was far from ideal. Wallace, like his older cousin who shares his name with him, was named after their great-grandfather. His relationship to his father, Daniel West, was tenous. Unsure even of the fact that that Daniel was his father, Wallace had few memories of his parents together (none of which were positive) and spent very little time with his father, who spent most of his life in and out of jail and halfway houses.[2]

As a very young boy, Wallace was brought on a trip to central city alongside his similarly-named cousin, Wally West on the day of Central City's Flash Day Parade by his aunt Iris. They visited Iris' boyfriend Barry Allen; Iris was called away for work, and took Wallace with her, leaving his cousin Wally with Barry, leading to the fateful incident that turned the elder Wally into Kid Flash.

This visit was not characteristic of Wallace's childhood; Wallace's mother loathed the West family, and often would not allow him to have anything to do with them. Wallace spent many of his summers growing up in Atlanta. Occasionally, he would run away from home, but always returned before nightfall, worried about the idea of leaving his mother alone with Daniel.[3]

Despite his mother's distaste for the West family, Wallace did occasionally spend time with his relatives. During these gatherings, the young Wallace would frequently tell other family members that he was better than anybody else at nearly anything. One day, his family got tired of his boasting, and gave him a whole day to prove his superiority. It was a disaster; in the process, he broke a window, burnt a salad, and got the fire department called. As a result, he was jokingly given the nickname Ace.[4]

Acting out, Wallace grew into something of a troublemaker; he would frequently cut classes he felt he had already mastered, and occasionally skipped school just to play video games and watch region-locked Japanese anime[5]. When Wallace's mother went missing when the Crime Syndicate tore through Central City, his aunt Iris West took him in and initially struggled to connect with him.[6]

The boy eventually began to ease out of his rebellious nature when he gained an admiration for Central City's hometown superhero the Flash. Wallace eventually gained a connection to the mysterious Speed Force, giving him superspeed that was unpredictable and hard to control, when a future version of himself sent his powers through time to his past self before dying.[7] With his new powers, Wallace attempted to help the Flash and his aunt in any way he could.

Wallace becomes Kid Flash

A few weeks later, the Speed Force was interrupted by a device created by Dr. Joseph Carver that created what would be known as a "Speed Force storm" over Central City. Anybody hit by one of the storm's lightning bolts would be granted super speed and a connection to the Speed Force. Among the many civilians that were struck, Wallace, too, was hit by a bolt of lightning, cementing his powers and making them more stable.[8]

Wallace, attempting to keep his powers a secret from his Aunt Iris, worked with the speedster Meena Dhawan, also known as "Fast Track", who helped him to better utilize and understand his gift. Dhawan was apparently killed by the new villainous speedster known as Godspeed, devastating Wallace and sending him looking for a new mentor. After working directly with the Flash for the first time to capture Godspeed, Wallace was taken under the Flash wing as the new Kid Flash.[9]

Teen Titans

Clash of the Titans

Early into his new career as a superhero, Kid Flash was abducted along with other young heroes by Robin, after being freed from his bindings by Starfire, Wallace and the rest attacked Robin in anger but he tells that they work well together and should join him in forming the latest incarnation of the Teen Titans as they took on the League of Assassins.[10] Kid Flash and the rest of the young heroes officially agreed on forming the new team after Damian gave himself up to save them from Ra's al Ghul.[11] During his time on the team Wallace began to grow a special friendship with Raven. However, his time with the Titans was cut short after he was tricked by Deathstroke into helping him save his son Grant Wilson from dying. But instead, Deathstroke absorbed Kid Flash's power for his own. Furious, Robin threw Kid Flash out of the Titans for his rashness.[12]

Project Defiance

Kid Flash as a member of Defiance

When Slade Wilson decided to assemble his own team as part of Adeline Kane's Project Defiance, Wallace was recruited into said team after being kicked out of the Teen Titans due to saving Slade in the past. Once in the Defiance HQ he met Tanya Spears.[13] Kid Flash participated on the team's first mission against Doctor Light and his Radiant Men in the Chetlan United Atlantic Islands, the mission proved successful when the team was rescued by Terra.[14]

Wallace participated during a training session where he watched Rose fight Slade.[15] In reality, Wallace's reason for joining Defiance was to spy on Deathstroke in order to regain the Teen Titan's trust, during this time he also developed a crush on Tanya.[16] Wallace eventually decided to leave the team, but Tanya begged him not to go as he was his best friend, she then kissed him and attempted to have sex with him to which Wallace refused. The next morning Kid Flash found Tanya apparently dead after killing herself when in reality she traveled to the innerverse in order to rescue Power Girl. Furious, Kid Flash went for Deathstroke and brutally beat him before leaving.[17]

The Color of Fear

Kid Flash eventually met Wally West and found out that Daniel West wasn't his uncle but his father.[18] Wallace also learned that Daniel died during a mission with the Suicide Squad and the Flash knew about it, which damaged their relationship despite him finding out that Barry was the Flash.[19]

Wallace was present in Barry's birthday party, through he was still angry that Barry hasn't told Iris that he was the Flash. During an attack by Multiplex, Wallace took Iris home but when they arrived, the two found the Reverse-Flash inside.[20] Eobard noted that Wallace's presence in the Flash's legacy was new while Kid Flash tried to attack him. Unfortunately, Wallace was no match for Eobard and was brutally beaten instead. After Thawne took Iris, Barry arrived and found Wallace badly injured before taking him to S.T.A.R. Labs to heal him while he dealt with Eobard.[21]

Kid Flash tries to help Negative Flash

Kid Flash received a message from Barry telling to come where he was at, there he saw that Meena was still alive, much to his delight. Meena explained to the Speedsters that she came back to save Barry, as he was dying from his contact with the Negative Speed Force. Meena took the two to the Central City Demolition Derby so they can test the effects of the Negative Speed Force. Flash starts running and in no time Flash begins to be consumed by the Negative Speed Force but Wallace manages to stop him from being torn apart and Barry thanks him for keeping him in check.

While Meena seemed excited with the results, Kid Flash began to find her behavior suspect, this suspicion proved to be true as Meena betrayed the two and revealed that she was an accomplice of Black Hole. Meena then took the powers of the Negative Speed Force from Barry, becoming the new Negative Flash.[22] Wallace tried to attack Meena but he was quickly beaten, Meena then left while the two speedster got attacked by Black Hole soldiers, though the managed to beat them, but they didn't know where Meena went.[23]

The Teen Titans try to save Superboy

Kid Flash later rejoined the Teen Titans.[24] He fought the Hangmen in New York with his team until they were saved by Superboy, who wanted to join the Teen Titans but was shut down by Robin. During a discussion inside the Titans Tower, an alternate version of Batman took control over the Tower and locked the team inside to fulfill his mission of killing Superboy due to a possible future where he destroyed Metropolis. In the middle of the attack Jon flew out of the tower and suddenly exploded, having developed a new, destructive power called the 'super-flare', Wallace tried to save the titans from the explosion by running around them forming a shield but they still got injured.[25]

After Kid Flash and the other titans regained consciousness from the attack, they found out that Robin left with Superboy in order to protect him. The team was then attacked by the alternate version Tim Drake, who now called himself Savior, and he managed to convince two of the titans to help him stop Superboy, with Wallace and the rest disagreeing.[26] Kid Flash, Aqualad and Starfire eventually found the Super Son before Savior could and they took the two to the Fortress of Solitude. As the Titans of Tomorrow arrived on the present, Jon panicked, accidentally charging up a way more dangerous super flare. With everyone working together to stop the detonation, future-Tim Drake absorbed the energy of the blast and sacrificing himself to save the day.[27] After the fight Damian hold a vote to make Jon a new member of the Teen Titans, but Wallace and the rest agreed in that it was too dangerous due to what just happened.[28]

Flash War

War of the Speedsters

Wallace was helping Iris, Barry and Wally in the garage, when the Renegades arrived and demanded to arrest Iris West for previously killing Eobard Thawne. A fight soon ensued but they all agreed to let them take Iris as long as they could help them with Wally's temporal seizure, so they all travel to the 25th Century.[29] Hunter Zolomon later persuaded Wally to go to the Speed Force and save his lost children, Barry chased after Wally as it was dangerous to tamper with the Speed Force, while Kid Flash, the Renegades and Iris stayed with Zolomon who showed his true colors before teleporting away, making the 25th century crumble.[30]

Wallace and Iris were saved from the time wave by Commander Cold, Kid Flash used his connection to the Speed Force and ran the three of them back into the time stream. They arrived back in the present where Barry and Wally were fightning Hunter Zolomon who now had the Strength Force and Sage Force acquired.[31] When Barry moved in on Iris' house, Wally decided to move out as he had discovered in the Flash Museum of the future that he didn't exist before Flashpoint and he was product of Barry's mistake.[32]

Sidekicks: No More!

Deciding to stop listening to what the "grown-ups" tell him to do, Kid Flash decided to act on his instincts from now on.[33] He agreed to join Damian's new Teen Titans as long as Damian also added Roundhouse to said team.[34] When Roundhouse was seemingly killed[35], Wallace felt a lot of grief over it, while Red Arrow saw it as an oportunity to train the team. He later went to Roundhouse's house to tell the family that he died, but was shocked when he saw that Roundhouse opened the door of the house and was still alive.[36] The Titans broke into the Batcave to get access to the Bat-Computer, though they were briefly attacked by a Batman Robot.[37] Wallace later found out that Damian was locking the villains they've defeated in a makeshift prison beneath Mercy Hall and, under the effects of hypnotic persuasion from Eobard Thawne, Wallace agreed to not reveal that information to the team.[38][39][40] The secret would not last long however, as the prisoners freed themselves, revealing the secret to the rest of the team.[41]

The team was later betrayed by Roundhouse, who stole Djinn's ring to get revenge on Damian for the death of his sister.[42] Despite this the team quickly forgave him after he saved them.[43] Wally and the titans later tried to stop Damian from killing KGBeast after he had already killed brother blood.[44] Batman eventually appeared and said that the Teen Titans were over due to Damian's actions.[45] During one of the team's final missions without Robin, Kid Flash was badly injured and later rescued by Emiko, who also kissed him. The team was later brought to the Titans Tower by the original Titans in order to join their academy.[46]

Kid Flash alongside Impulse

Wallace later arrived at Central City after receiving a call from Barry along with Avery Ho, Flash arrived and told the two that the Reverse-Flash was back and killed Godspeed. Barry tells them that it's better if he deals with Thawne alone, but Kid Flash and Avery followed him to the Speed Lab where it's revealed that Barry just didn't want them to see how he kills Eobard.[47] After Eobard started to attack Central City with his Legion of Zoom, Barry sent Wallace along with Iris and Avery away to a safe house.[48]

Flash quickly visited them at the safe house but was attacked by Impulse who said that he wasn't Barry but Thawne, who had taken control of the Flash's body.[49] All the speedsters later followed Thawne to confront him, with Jay Garrick also arriving to help, Barry managed to free himself from Thawne's control and regain control over his body while he was being guarded by Kid Flash and the rest.[50] Kid Flash and rest of the Flash Family fought the Legion of Zoom while Barry defeated Eobard.[51] After the fight Wallace attended to a celebration in Barry's house.[52]

Wallace and the Flashes escape the Darkest Knight.

After The Batman Who Laughs, empowered by Perpetua, transformed the world into a nightmarish landscape, Wallace was searching for the Teen Titans until he felt Barry, Wally and Jay running from the Darkest Knight through the Speed Force. The Darkest Knight then summoned a horde of Dark Flashes to chase them down until Wally used Johnny Quick's Speed Formula to briefly stop time, bringing them to a stop outside the Flash Museum.

After some discussion and realizing that the Speed Force was being corrupted, the four Speedster ran into the horde as soon as time resumed in order to get to the Mobius Chair. Wallace eventually couldn't keep up with the two Flashes and decided to go for Jay, who had previously stayed behind. Fortunately, Wally managed to get to the chair which brought Wallace and the rest of the Flash Family out of the nightmarish battlefield, as they found refuge in the Speed Force.[53]

During the final stand against the Darkest Knight's army, Kid Flash along with other Speedsters went into the battlefield to help the other heroes fight the army from the Last 52 Multiverse.[54]

After the original Titans opened the Titans Academy in honor of Roy Harper so they could train new kids to be future Titans, Kid Flash along with his friends worked as the core Teen Titans team that got sent on missions. Wallace and the team defeated the Clock King while the other students were in their first day. Kid Flash later assisted to Nightwing's birthday party.[55] Wallace got his friend Avery to help him prepare for a date with Emiko while they also stopped the Rogues.[56]

Wallace was also present along with his team during the Titans' gathering to report the attack by the mysterious Red X.[57] Kid Flash later appeared to rescue Bolt from an attack of the Suicide Squad and Red X, during the fight Wallace was confused to see Superboy with the squad. After the fight Crush also decided to leave the Titans, much to Wallace and the rest of the team's confusion.[58]

Dark Crisis

Burst Wallace West Prime Earth 0001

Wallace as Burst.

Iris told Wallace and Wally that Barry Allen hadn't been seen since he left on a mission with Justice League Incarnate.[59] Mister Terrific tracked Barry's unique resonance signature in the Speed Force, and was able narrow his possible location to three alternate realities. The Flash Family gathered at the Flash Museum to go into the Force and hopefully find Barry and bring him home. The West twins ran through the portal into the Speed Force before anyone could stop them and Jay Garrick jumped in after them. The remaining speedsters split into two teams to rescue both Barry and Jay and the kids. Wally and Wallace went through the portal and emerged in Earth-Flash.1, a pocket dimension created by Pariah as Barry's personal paradise.[60]

They saw Barry speaking to what appeared to be a younger version of Wally. Barry and the other Wally split up and Wally told Wallace to trail his counterpart while Wally tried to talk to Barry. Wallace followed the other Wally to his home but when he went in, an adult version of Wally appeared behind Wallace and told him that he was retired, and Wallace was the adult hero Burst. Wallace was momentarily confused but his memories adjusted to the new reality.[61] However, when a duplicate of his father appeared, alive and human, Wallace realised the world was a lie. The illusion crumbled around him and he fled back to Earth 0, reuniting with Barry and Wally.[62] Wallace and the Flash Family later helped the superheroes contain the waves of supervillain attacks created by Deathstroke. He also informed Wally about a massive breakout from Iron Heights where all the prisoners escaped before they could respond.[63]

One-Minute War

Kid Flash had a bust interrupted by Impulse at the same time a mysterious spire arrived on Earth while everyone who wasn't a speedster froze in time. This was the arrival of the Fraction, an interdimensional empire that used the Speed Force to plunder various worlds.[64] The two were then attacked by some Fraction soldiers but were rescued by Jay Garrick.[65]

Powers

  • Speed Force Conduit: After his future counterpart's death, Wallace gained a connection to the Speed Force, a mysterious cosmic force that pushes time and space itself forward. As it does this, the Speed Force creates excess energy that builds up and needs to be released. Wallace, along with all speedsters connected to the Force, acts as a release valve for the Speed Force. When Wallace uses his powers, he taps into that built up energy and expends it.[66][67]
    • Superhuman Speed: Wallace is capable of moving at vast superhuman speeds and can only be perceived as a blur to the naked eye, as well as run across water[68] and up buildings.[69] Wallace does admit he is not as fast as Barry Allen[70] but is still able to move at superhuman speeds equal to the speed of light (186,000 miles per second).[71]
    • Superhuman Reflexes: Wallace possesses reflexes far greater than a normal human being. This allows him to perceive the world in slow motion.[7]
    • Superhuman Stamina: Wallace's body can handle the stress of moving at superhuman speeds for long periods of time without out getting tired or weak.
    • Superhuman Agility: Wallace's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to superhuman levels. This allows him to easily make sharp turns and leap far distances while moving at superhuman speed.
    • Speed Force Aura: Wallace's body is surrounded by a Speed Force Aura, or "friction cushion" - a bubble of space-time accelerated to the same velocity as Wallace. This aura allows Wallace to breathe and hear sounds while moving at immense speeds, as well as protects him and anyone who he is running with from the rigorous effects of using his speed, including friction, airborne particulate matter, kinetic impacts, G-Force and the like.
      • Superhuman Durability: Wallace is capable of resisting tremendous kinetic impact forces that could easily crush or kill a human, without suffering any serious external or internal injuries.
    • Accelerated Healing: Wallace is able to rapidly regenerate from injuries at rates much quicker than any normal human.[72][73]
    • Aerokinesis: By running in a circular motion or spinning his arms at super-speed, Wallace is able to generate strong vortices of wind.[74] He was also able to use his speed to generate enough differential wind to cancel out the force of a large tidal wave.[69]
    • Dimensional Travel: By homing in on the energy signature left by Deathstroke's gravity sheath, Wallace was able to accelerate faster than ever before, past light-speed and into the Speed Force.[75]
    • Electrokinesis: Wallace is able to generate and manipulate the electrical energy he draws from the Speed Force. This Speed Force lightning emanates off of him as a red aura of electricity, especially when he moves at super-speed.[76] Wallace was able to use his Speed Force lightning to restart the Flash's heart after it had given out.[77]
      • Electro-Blast: Wallace has learned that if he focuses, he can project his Speed Force energy as bolts of lightning from his hands.[74] By running in circles, he can build a larger charge and hurl much more powerful lightning bolts.[73]
      • Electromagnetism: Due to his electrokinetic abilities, Wallace possesses some level of manipulation over magnetism. He can use his lightning to create electromagnetic fields.[78] By running across Girder's back, he was able to align the atoms of his metallic skin, turning him into a giant magnet.[79]
      • Energy Construct Creation: Wallace discovered if he concentrated, he could use the Speed Force to create solid energy constructs, which he used to compose his costume.[80]
      • Light Projection: When in extreme duress, Wallace is able to generate blinding amounts of light through sheer force of will.[81]
      • Speed Force Absorption: By interlocking energy currents, Wallace can drain away the Speed Force, or Negative Speed Force from other speedsters who's DNA has not completely bonded to the Speed Force, or energy sources such as a Speed Force storm.[67]
      • Speed Force Negation: By interlocking his Speed Force energy currents with another speedster, Wallace is able to temporarily short circuit the other speedsters power, creating a "lightning burst".[82] He was also able to calm the Negative Speed Force in the Flash, by interlocking energy currents with him.[83]
    • Enhanced Senses: The Speed Force grants Wallace enhanced senses that allow him to perceive the world at a rate attuned his reaction speed.[7] When the Flash "died" after his heart gave out, the Speed Force drew Wallace to his location. He was also able to feel the Speed Force in Wally's body after his death.[77]
    • Molecular Acceleration: When Wallace vibrates his molecules too fast, he can cancel out the molecular frequency of objects around him and destroy them.[81]
    • Speed Steal: Wallace is able to absorb the speed and/or momentum from moving objects. He demonstrated this by slowing a group of airborne bullets.[83]
    • Time Travel: By running fast enough, Wallace was able to travel back to the time stream and then to the present from being in stuck in "Nowhen".[84]
    • Telepathy: Wallace has demonstrated the ability to enter the minds of other speedsters via the Speed Force.[85]

Abilities

  • At his introduction, Wallace was introduced as Wally, the son of Rudy West, Iris' older brother.[6] However, in DC Rebirth, it is revealed there are two Wally Wests: one the son of Rudy, and one the son of Daniel - this Wally being the son of Daniel West,[89] whom he was raised to believe was his uncle.[8][90] It has yet to be revealed which West Wallace believed to be his father before learning the truth, as it logically could not have been Daniel.
    • This Wally is now referred to as "Wallace" to differentiate him from his cousin.[91]
  • He discovered that he was created due to Barry's mistake when he created Flashpoint.[92]
  • The Flash (Avery Ho),[93] Power Girl,[94] and Roundhouse[95] all consider Wallace their best friend.
