Synopsis for "Requiem for a Gunfighter!"

Hex is in pursuit of the Bart Jethro gang in the Arizona Territory. He comes upon a cabin in flames and notices that there is a man trapped inside. He rescues the man but then comes under fire from an unknown assailant in the distance. Hex attempts to locate his attacker but he is long gone by the time he reaches his shooting position. The only clue left behind horse tracks on the ground with odd shaped heel calks. He goes back to interview the young man that he pulled out of the flames and he introduces himself as Frank Joad. Joad reveals that their shooter was probably a vicious killer by Ransome later broke out and swore revenge on the Sheriff and his family. Ransom then murders the Sheriff and his wife and he is now after Frank Joad in an effort to complete his revenge. Joad then asks for Hex’s help in becoming a gunfighter. He wants the ability to defend himself as he goes after Wade Ransom. Hex flat out refuses to train the young man for fear that he will lead the life of a gunfighter, always looking over his shoulder for the inevitable bullet to the spine. He bids the young man goodbye and continues on his way to hunt the Jethro gang. As he continues through the canyon, Hex is eventually attacked by the runaway outlaws, and he is apprehended. Hex is tied up and thrown over a cliff into a river below. His waist is tied down with a big boulder to ensure that he drowns. He hits the water, but the scene is witnessed by Frank Joad from a nearby bank. He jumps into the river after Hex and saves his life. Hex thanks Joad for the rescue and then begins to train him as a gunfighter. Joad had argued that the could help bring in the Jethro gang if he had a weapon and training. Joad is a quick learner, and he begins to acquire his gunfighting skills very quickly. It isn’t long before he feels confident enough to take on any challenge, especially as he tries to revenge his parents. The pair then commences to pursue the outlaws once again. They finally catch up to the gang a few weeks later as they sneak up on them in the dead of night. The Jethro gang surrenders without incident but as Hex is retrieving their guns, young Joad holsters his weapon. The gang notices that they are not being covered and this forces a shootout. Hex and Joad are more than a match for the outlaws and the Jethro gang is gunned down after a brief exchange. When the shooting is over they are all dead lying on the ground. Hex is disgusted with Joad for forcing the shootout. He tells him that they will turn the bodies over to the sheriff, but he never wants to see Joad again. They arrive in town the following afternoon with the dead outlaws in tow. As he dismounts in front of the saloon he notices a horse with odd shaped heel calks and Hex immediately recognizes the horse as belonging to the shooter that attacked him earlier at the burning cabin. Hex enters the saloon and confronts the owner of the hose. Hex assumes him that the owner is Wade Ransom the killer but Hex is shocked to learn that Ransom is the son of the dead Sheriff. Ransome’s father was gunned down by Frank Joad as revenge for sending him to prison. Joad then killed the Sheriff and his wife as an act of revenge. Ransome has been hunting Joad down and almost had him trapped in a cabin and he set it on fire to make him come out but he had to flee when he saw that he was outgunned. Ransome suddenly realizes that Joad is waiting outside and he charges for the door. Hex attempts to stop him knowing that Ransome will be no match for Joad’s newly acquired gun fighting skills. Hex is whacked over the head for his interference and Ransome heads out the entrance to challenge Joad. It isn’t much of a match and Ransome lies dead in the streets. Joad tauntingly thanks Hex for teaching him and Hex realizes that he will have to challenge the newcomer himself. The two face off and draw their guns. Hex is hit in the shoulder but he manages to kill Joad. Even though Joad was faster, Hex turned out to be the better shot.
