Synopsis for "Petunia, the Elephant Who Joined the Sweathogs"

Breakfast (the comic opens as does the show – with the Family Kotter at the beginning of their day) finds Kotter complaining about his meal. Julie spots an elephant on the street below. They meet Adrian Rookwhistle II and his companion, the elephant Petunia. Their circus went bankruptcy and they are now wandering the streets of Brooklyn. Kotter catches Petunia picking Julie’s purse. The police appear and arrest Rookwhistle for passing bad checks. Julie promises to watch Petunia over Gabe’s objection. At school, Woodman searches the Sweathogs’s lockers for his missing car. Kotter convinces Woodman that Buchanan High needs a mascot. Woodman agrees. The Sweathogs meet Petunia and befriend her – until she tries to pick Epstein’s pocket and her trunk is caught in the mousetrap he keeps in his back pocket. You read that right… Scared, Petunia runs off and nearly destroys the neighborhood! They take her to Horshack’s uncle’s car wash for the evening, where Petunia’s bath turns into a water right. The next morning, Petunia goes to Buchanan High where other animals compete for the role of mascot. Epstein picks a fight – and loses – to a kangaroo. Oliver Smarmy introduces himself to Kotter. Smarmy is running for Congress and hired (and bailed out) Rootwhistle to use Petunia for his campaigning. Woodman is chased up a flagpole by the other mascot candidates – dogs, snakes, a koala, an aardvark, etc.
