Quote1 Well, Folks, Sivana's secret was really a cinch for Capt. Marvel's super-wisdom to figure out. By calculating the orbits and timing of each electron and each atom in a solid wall, he could time his own atoms to pass between those of the wall like smoke through a screen. Each time, however, a slight amount of his own substance got left behind, causing the ghost-like after-image, and finally he used himself all up and there was nothing left after that last fatal wall. And that's the end of my story. Good night, Everybody. Quote2
Billy Batson

Whiz Comics #14 is an issue of the series Whiz Comics (Volume 1) with a cover date of March, 1941.

Synopsis for Captain Marvel: "Sivana's Ghostly Power"

While awaiting trial for his many prior crimes, using only pencil and paper, Sivana figures out an extremely complex mathematical formula, enabling him to make himself intangible by sheer mental effort, and uses this knowledge to escape from custody. He launches a new series of destructive and ambitious crimes, culminating in the kidnapping of the U.S. President. Sivana also succeeds in imprisoning Captain Marvel inside a diamond-hard underground cell. But with the Wisdom of Solomon, Marvel is able to work out Sivana's same calculations, and phases himself out of the prison. With both adversaries now using intangibility, there is a chase and a struggle, until Sivana's form becomes transparent and indistinct, then vanishes completely. In Captain Marvel's opinion, Sivana is now gone for good.

Sivana's unwilling accomplice Beautia is distraught with grief, and when Billy asks her why she stuck with the old villain, she is mortified with shame and won't tell him her family secret.

Notes

  • Whiz Comics #14 and #15 were both dated "March 1941". Whiz Comics was being published every four weeks, at that time.
  • Sivana's Ghostly Power is reprinted in 'The Shazam! Archives Vol. 1'.
    • This is the origin of Sivana's rarely used intangibility power, which is presented as a mathematical formula of his own invention that he can recite to somehow control his own body's atoms. The ability is risky if used repeatedly, and Sivana seems to die from abusing it (but returns without explanation in Whiz Comics Vol 1 15). Captain Marvel deduces the same formula and from now on he, too, can become intangible, although he will only very rarely use that power.
    • At the end of this story, the reader still doesn't know that Beautia is Sivana's daughter.
  • Despite this cover, Captain Marvel does not in any way fight a torpedo, nor less does he "boomerang" one.
  • Also appearing in this issue of Whiz Comics was:
    • "The Ghost" (text story)
