Winath is a primarily agrarian planet described as the Bread Basket of the United Planets. Winath is the homeworld of Legionnaires Lightning Lad and Lightning Lass, who are twins, as well as their older sibling, the supervillain Lightning Lord.
History
Winath was one of the Buffer Planets seeded by Valor, after the Dominator Invasion! of Earth. The planet was settled between Dominion space and Earth to prevent any future attacks. The planet is the third planet from the Star known as Amarta. One of the smaller planetoids in the sector is called Korbal, which is home to various wildlife, particularly the dangerous Lightning Beasts.
Due to the Dominators' genetic engineering, twin births are ubiquitous on Winath, accounting for almost all natives of the planet. Single births are very rare, and those without a twin (such as Mekt Ranzz, aka Lightning Lord) are often pitied or outcast.
Zero Hour
In post-Zero Hour continuity, Winath is one of the first planets to react to the so-called "Durlan problem" by leaving the United Planets and joining the Affiliated Planets, after one of the twin presidents is shot, supposedly by Chameleon Boy. It transpires this was a plot by his brother, who is arrested by the Legion.
Earth-Prime
In Earth Prime continuity, Winath is beset by fierce thunderstorms, and most of the buildings are underground creating the impression on the surface that there are only small isolated farmhouses.
Winathians believe in a supernatural being called Validus, the Lord of Lightning.
Mekt Ranzz was a member of a cult which worships Validus, and which has grown in his absence. The members of the cult now seem to include many prominent Winathians and the Ranzz parents. The members of the cult have all acquired lightning powers through nanomachines apparently created by a Coluan named Vrax Gozzl, a member of Wanderers.

Notes
- Legionnaires Lightning Lad and Lightning Lass, and their brother Lightning Lord powers are not related to their planet of origin, unlike many other members of the team.
Trivia
- The pronunciation of Winath has always been subject to misinterpretation. Apparently, Pre-Zero Hour it is pronounced Wine-ath, Post-Zero Hour, it is pronounced Win-ath, and the Threeboot Legion pronounces it Win-athe.[2] It is also pronounced Wine-ath in the Legion of Super-Heroes TV Series.
- Prior to being known as Winath, the planet was previously identified (once) as "Amarta" in a text article about Lightning Lad and Light Lass titled, Meet the Legionnaires.[3]
