Synopsis for "Ring Out the Wretched!"

An ex-convict places the man who got him convicted under a post-hypnotic suggestion to have an extreme reaction to the sound of bells. He tells his victim that eventually the bell ringing will drive him to take his own life. In order to avoid city noise the man takes a boat out to sea, unaware that the ex-convict has stowed away. The ex-convict reveals himself and gloats and his victim knocks them both into the water. The ex-convict is attacked by sharks and pleads for help but his victim has been knocked out. When he comes to, he makes his way towards a buoy and clings to it. The coast guard sights him and moves closer to pick him up even though he waves them away because the waves will make the buoy ring. The incessant ringing of the buoy threatens to drive him mad so he lets go of the buoy and drowns before the coast guard can reach him.
