World's Finest #115 is an issue of the series World's Finest (Volume 1) with a cover date of February, 1961.

Synopsis for Superman and Batman: "The Curse that Doomed Superman"

When Superman is scheduled to punch through a nearby mountain to give crews access to a pocket of natural gas, he is stopped by a swami who warns him against defiling a sacred site. The police come to take the man away warning Superman that he will be cursed if he continues with his task. Ignoring the warning, Superman carries out his task anyway. The next day when Superman appears at a children's charity fundraiser with Batman and Robin in Gotham City, he is once more confronted by the swami who tells Superman that he will be cursed. As the police drag the man away again, his turban begins to unravel and Batman and Robin both notice a jewel come free and fall to the ground.

When Superman detects that the cable of a nearby bridge is about to snap, he flies himself, Batman and Robin to the location. Superman succeeds in stopping the support cable for the bridge from snapping but then, to Batman and Robin's surprise, uses his x-ray vision to evaporate the water below. Thinking that the swami's curse has come true, Batman rushes in front of the Man of Steel with a block of lead to block his x-ray vision until he snaps out of it.

Later, when the display for a new monster movie runs amok, Superman pulls it out of traffic before it causes an accident. Suddenly, his sanity lapses again and he tosses it into the air, and when it returns on fire from friction upon reentry into the atmosphere Superman begins flying it toward the Musical Village museum. To save the museum Batman and Robin use a giant accordion to send the burning display into the nearby ocean. Batman recalls the jewel from the Swami's turban and goes back to the site of the charity and recovers it, but fails to find any answers and decides to investigate things further.

Meanwhile, Superman goes about various acts of heroics followed by seemingly random bouts of insanity. When Superman's most recent bout of insanity -- involving dubbing himself the "King of Gotham City" fashioning himself a crown out of the wheel of a car, and breaking into the Gotham City Bank to count the money among other things -- Batman and Robin rush to the Batcave to examine the swami's headpiece. Sure enough, they find traces of clay that is located four miles underground and Batman deduces what's going on. Rushing to the abandoned Donlon's Theatrical Warehouse, they find a bunch of crooks there digging a tunnel right underneath the mock-up rocket where all the charity money is being stored. Fighting the crooks, they reveal a chunk of Red Kryptonite, thus explaining Superman's bouts of insanity. With the Kryptonite taken away, Superman briefly gains telepathy before the Red-K's effects wear off and he learns of the plot and comes to assist Batman and Robin in gathering up the crooks.

Notes

  • The Superman/Batman story of this issue uses the concept of Red Kryptonite very liberally. Usually, Superman is affected by the Kryptonite for about 24 hours and after initial exposure he is no longer affected by the same chunk twice. This issue suggests that this chunk's effects are only temporary and that the Kryptonite can be used multiple times.
