The “death” of Superman proves to be a hoax to get evidence on the Big Four, and the transplanted organs are only mechanical parts from an android duplicate of Nim-El. The bodies of the Big Four reject the organs at the same time, with catastrophic consequences. Batman and Robin try to save Ace Shane, the recipient of the defective lungs, but Lex Luthor stops them and Superman arrives too late to prevent Shane’s death. After Superman reveals the whole plan to an astonished Luthor, Batman and Robin say that the other three gangsters may be helped through surgery.
